    EDUCATION

2008 – 2009: Graduate Diploma, Advanced Materials, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland

Thesis: Polymer-clay Nanocomposites: A Literature Review

Abstract: Polymer clay nanocomposites have been proven to generally exhibit better mechanical properties than pristine polymers, including increased tensile modulus, young’s modulus, thermal stability and a form of fire retardency. This is a review of work done in the area of polymer nanocomposites, including methods of production, types of structure, factors effecting structure and factors effecting mechanical and thermal properties. It was found that the most commercial production method was melt intercalation. Best mechanical properties are generally found in nanocomposites with low clay loading < 8%, and best thermal stability was found in nanocomposites with relatively high clay loadings > 10%. Exfoliated structures are likely to occur when there is low clay loading and agglomerated or phase separated structures are likely when there is high clay loading.

2004 – 2008: Bachelor of Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland

Thesis: Fracture Mechanics testing of a Steel Gas Pipeline using Compact Tension Specimens

Abstract: Fracture mechanics testing of steel has been well researched in the past, but with new grades of steel such as X100 and X120 now available, extensive testing must be carried out. This project set out to utilize the ASTM E1820-01 standard using information in the standard two types of X100 compact tension specimens were to be tested. In order to follow the ASTM E1820-01 procedure two clevis (type of fixture), an adapter and other parts were designed and manufactured. As X100 is ductile steel this project aimed to find the fracture toughness by using the J-integral. The load vs. displacement curves of all four specimens matched results achieved by other researchers but compliance and fracture toughness results were not as expected. The fracture toughness varied from 2.06E06 N/m to 3.8E06 N/m and all results showed a much higher fracture toughness compared to previous works. Pop-in was observed in all specimens, which could indicate either a bad batch of X100 steel or a material property. Further research into the material properties of X100 is needed.
