    Education

    January 2007 – March 2010

    Aerospace Engineering Ph.D. Degree

    Institute

Politecnico di Milano – Milan, Italy

    Thesis Title

“Biologically inspired control of grasp-less and grasping tasks”

    Thesis Summary

The thesis studies two problems: the grasp-less pushing of an object on

a table, and the synthesis of a grasp. For each of them a control architecture has been proposed, adopting the paradigm of learning and taking inspiration from the studies about the human cognitive development to design its structure and main principles

    Most Significant Results

In the field of grasp-less manipulation: 1)development of a new control

architecture conceived at its origin to be based on learning; 2)proof of its effectiveness in extensive computer simulation; 3)introduction of the concept of wake-sleep phase alternation to increase the performance of the controller through meta-learning; 4)development of a new algorithm, called Multi-Sample Hierarchical Regression, to simulate the role of a long-term associative memory.

In the field of the grasp synthesis problem: 1)development of a control architecture based on the newly introduced concept of synergy between hardware and software; 2)proof of its effectiveness through the implementation on a real, highly advanced, robotic platform (TWENDY-ONE robot from Sugano Laboratory, http://twendyone.com/index_e.html); 3)successful implementation of the principle of executive learning (i.e. on-line adaptation) to increase the quality of the grasp and its robustness, tested thanks to the development of a multi-body computer simulation of a soft skin equipped robotic hand.
