The third batch of four satellites in the O3b medium Earth orbit (MEO) constellation, operated by O3b Networks, was successfully launched by Arianespace on December 18 from French Guiana using a Soyuz rocket. The first four satellites have been in orbit since June 2013, while the second batch, launched on July 10, 2014. The constellation of 8 became fully operational in September. The services offered by these eight satellites are highly successful - confirming the validity of the O3b desi...

Laser ranging from Earth to NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) was a milestone in the 50-year history of satellite laser ranging. Launched in 2009 and still orbiting the moon in 2014, LRO was the first spacecraft beyond Earth orbit to be routinely tracked using lasers, which were located at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and other facilities. “The advantage of laser ranging is its accuracy, and that was apparent even in the earliest e...

The 2-hr., 22-min. flight began with the propulsion of Soyuz' basic three-stage launch vehicle, and was followed by multiple burns of its Fregat upper stage. O3b Networks' four satellites were released in two pha...

NASA and an international team of planetary scientists have found evidence in meteorites on Earth that indicates Mars has a distinct and global reservoir of water or ice near its surface. Though controversy still surrounds the origin, abundance and history of water on Mars, this discovery helps resolve the question of where the "missing Martian water" may have gone. Scientists continue to study the planet's historical record, trying to understand the apparent shift from an early wet and warm ...
