    DESIGN PROJECT DETAILS

    PROJECT - 1

Project: 18 GHz digital radio (SDH-Radio)
Team: 25 Engineers, Senior Engineers and Managers.
    My contribution:

 Design of Phase lock loop for hybrid circuit Ku band Dielectric Resonator Oscillators (PLDRO).
The RF section: In this section of the SDH Radio, there is three stage up and down-conversions of the signal. For use in the third up-conversion and first down conversion stage, PLDROs at four different frequencies (15.9GHz, 16.2GHz, 16.9GHz and 17.2GHz) are designed for use as LO sources. These are hybrid MIC oscillators designed using FET from NEC; phase locked using commercially available SMD components like phase detector and Op Amp from Analog Devices.

 Design of 100 MHz crystal oscillator and amplifier using lumped components
Description: This oscillator is designed to supply the reference signal for the sampling phase detector. The SPD requires a higher level (+20dBm) from the reference, so an accompanying amplifier stage is also designed. This is a hybrid MIC design using commercially available FET from Infineon.

 Testing of Ku and K band power amplifiers and low noise amplifiers
Description: The power amplifiers were tested and tuned for power gain, P1dB and third harmonic Intermodulation product. The low noise amplifiers were tested and tuned for power gain and noise figure.

    PROJECT – 2

    Project: VSAT RFT design
Team: 3 Engineers, 2 Senior Engineers and a Sr. Manager.
    My contribution:

 Module and commercial parts selection for C Band and XC band VSAT transceivers architecture
Description: Different commercially available modules and parts required to design these systems were identified. A technical feasibility report was generated.

 Design of hybrid MIC Voltage controlled oscillator for C band
Description: The VCO is designed for the final up-conversion and first down conversion stages of the VSAT RF Transreceiver (RFT). This is a hybrid MIC using commercially available FET from Infineon.

    PROJECT - 3

    Project: Ka-Band satellite receiver
Team: 5 Engineers, Senior Engineers and Managers.
    My contribution:

 Design of local oscillator trays usinf lumped component hybrid MIC circuits.
This receiver architecture incorporates a two-stage down conversion from Ka-band to 70 MHz. Two independent local oscillators, one is Ku band (3.425GHz x 4) and one in S band (2.376Ghz) are designed for this purpose. These oscillators are designed using devices (FETs) commercially available in the market.

 Design of hybrid MIC Frequency Doubler for S-band
In the first local oscillator, a multiplier approach is follower. The oscillator is made at S band (3.425GHz) and then frequency is multiplied by 4 to scale to Ku band. This design makes use of commercially available FET from Infineon.

     Testing and measurement

o Temperature testing and compensation of down converter modules
The down converters are tested and compensated for gain variation over –10 deg C to +65 deg C. Thermopads from EMC technology are used for compensation.
o Testing and tuning of gain slope equalizers at S-band
Passive gain slope equalizers are tested and tuned in-situ to compensate the negative gain slopes observed in down converters.
o Complete Integration and testing of Ka-band receiver including temperature tests.
Two down-converters per channel, two local oscillators and eight accompanying filters are integrated into one module and tested for various parameters over temperature.
