2002–Dec 2005 Shimadzu Research Laboratory Manchester Principal PCB Design Engineer My role was as the Principal PCB Design Engineer for research projects for a world-leading, mass spectrometry & microscopy R&D department based in the Using CADSTAR, the different types of boards I designed ranged from simple interfaces and test boards, to the design of bleeding-edge, dense, complex designs. Including High Voltage power supplies operating at up to 40kV with specific spacing rules (creepage & clearance) for isolation. Digital Synthesizers & Signal Generators for simulation and sampling instruments using BGA technology. Some of the boards had signal integrity requirements that required specific design rules to be met and also to interface with FPGA development tools (Xilinx). I have experience with the design of controlled impedance stacks, signal integrity analysis, EMC and Low-Voltage Directive compliance. I have designed multi-layer boards up to 14 layers with length constraints for skew & delay & use of LVDS for specific routing requirements (differential pairs etc). I have a good working knowledge and understanding of ROHS requirements and many associated disciplines. I also gained experience in some use of AutoCAD for minor mechanical design and DXF transfer. Key Accountabilities Schematic entry, PCB layout, Library part entry & maintenance. Introduction of BGA technology within Shimadzu Research Laboratory. Introduction of IPC-7351 Completed IPC Certified Interconnect Designer qualification. Creating & managing all CAD parts libraries. & supporting 5 engineers. |

1991-2000 AMEK Systems & Controls PCB Design Engineer Using P-CAD and for the last 4 years, using CADSTAR and working within the R&D department for a leading professional audio design & manufacturing company. I started as an apprentice whilst taking formal education on a day release basis. I gained experience in prototyping on breadboard from schematics and also functional testing before moving into PCB design. The boards of varying levels of complexity but typically, PTH boards with strict design rules concerning signal integrity in terms of crosstalk and signal conditioning. I designed multi-layer boards up to 6 layers, primarily 2 powerplane and 4 signal layers using P-CAD and CADSTAR design systems. Boards were sensitive analogue / digital and mixed technology designs, designed to work to strict noise and performance specifications in the world of professional audio, where performance is everything. All products were designed to meet Electromagnetic Compatibility Directives and Low Voltage Equipment Directives. I gained experience in design for manufacture for Automatic Insertion & SMT pick & place machinery in addition to the standard re-flow and wave solder processes. I also designed jigs and crop plates to aid the assembly & test purposes. All boards were designed for manufacture in-house using pick & place, radial & axial insertion, wave solder & reflow assembly processes, in a medium to high production volume. Key Accountabilities Schematic & PCB design Creation of all manufacturing data for PCB fabrication & ordering. Creation of all data for use with the test & manufacturing departments. Management & control of the engineering change orders for use within the entire company. |
