"Development of analytical and numerical models for the study of the flight in formation of satellites"
    • Thesis description

The purpose of the thesis work has been to estimate the accuracy of analytical models in the long term prediction of the relative motion for formation flying satellites.
I have analytically derived and studied Hill’s linearized equations of relative motion that, in the past, have been used to analyze relative motion between satellites in neighbor orbits. Although it’s possible to utilize this model for design several formation type, it’s not able to capture the effect of the J2 gravitational perturbation due to the earth non-sphericity (this is the major motion perturbation for satellites in Low Earth Orbits). To minimize fuel consumption and maximize lifetime, I have derived a new set of constant-coefficient, linearized differential equations that are able to capture the effects of the J2 potential. In order to check the fidelity of the models and demonstrate that the last one  is well suited to model satellites relative motion, I have employed a numerical simulator that simulate the  relative motion of formation flying satellites under the realistic J2  effects.
