Space station dodges controversial junk

The ATV and its four solar panels are visible at the bottom of the image.For the first time in five years, the international space station changed course on Wednesday to avoid a piece of space junk — in this case, satellite debris that the Russians have insisted wasn't there.


Dead star inside Crab Nebula still shines bright

This image of the Crab Nebula, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, reveals the intricate epitaph of a long-dead star.The glowing Crab Nebula, a spectacular and colorful object famously imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope, represents the leftovers from a supernova explosion observed by Chinese and Arab astronomers in 1054 C.E.


Stuck pin delays shuttle's trek to launch pad

In the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, space shuttle Atlantis is moved across the I-beam toward the waiting external fuel tank and twin solid rocket boosters in high bay 3. NASA engineers successfully freed a stuck metal pin on the space shuttle Atlantis late Tuesday, but the work delayed plans to roll the spacecraft out to its Florida launch pad this week.


Computer virus strikes space station

NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff, Expedition 17 flight engineer, uses a computer while working with an experiment in the Japanese Kibo laboratory of the international space station. A computer virus was detected aboard the space station on July 25, 2008, but did not infect the space station's command and control computers. A virus designed to swipe passwords from online gamers has inexplicably popped up in some laptop computers aboard the international space station.


Dark matter detected in cosmic crash

This clash of clusters provides further evidence for dark matter. Ordinary matter, mostly in the form of hot gas, glows brightly in X-rays (shown in pink) and was slowed down by the collision. But dark matter (shown in blue) passed right through. Click on the image for a larger version.Astronomers say fresh imagery of a powerful collision of galaxy clusters supports the idea that dark matter is something totally separate from ordinary matter.

    I have got a keen interest and an extensive experience in the exploitation of large-area multi-wavelength extragalactic surveys aimed at giving astronomy in general, and particularly at FIR and submillimeter wavelengths, a sound statistical basis, in astronomical data reduction and analysis and related software development and in science and observation planning for space astronomy missions. I have also worked on the numerical modeling of astronomical instrumentation and sky properties in order to evaluate the expected performance of future instrumentation, and on the testing/commissioning of space instrumentation. I have been involved in the development of one of the most powerful method for ISO data reduction and analysis, and I either led or co-led major ISO and Spitzer data reduction and analysis programs, including the production of the largest ISO 15 micron and Spitzer 70 and 160 micron extragalactic catalogues produced to date by any individual project carried out by these missions at these wavelengths. I have contributed to the definition and the development of the Herschel ground segment as well of the SPIRE data management and processing system. I am a recognized expert in multi-wavelength extragalactic surveys, catalogue cross-correlation, source identification and photometric redshift determination and I have strong links with the FIR and submillimeter scientific and instrumental community. I have long been involved with prominent roles in world-wide scientific consortia and have got substantial experience in coordinating small but geographically distributed working groups of both a scientific and technical nature, organizing and managing meetings, drafting requirements and similar management tasks. I am genuinely attracted to challenges and projects requiring a wide range of expertise. I often have strong opinions but appreciate the need to come to a mutually satisfactory agreement, and I enjoy working as part of a focused team as well as to take the lead on specific issues.
