Remote Imaging System Acquisition (Senior Capstone Project)

Sponsored by NASA at the Johnson Space Center (August 2008-May2009)

  • Improved NASA’s Remote Imaging System Acquisition project.
    • Project to be used on the Orion space vehicle where the overall goal is to reduce six current imaging systems to one.
    • Accomplished goals set by sponsor.  Resulting technological advancements will be used in the next iteration of the project.

·         Analyzed and tested liquid lens aberrations and compared them to traditional lenses.

o        Performed contrast transfer function (CTF) and distortion testing.

·         Created compound lens system including micro-imaging lens and liquid lens.

o        Proved variable focus capabilities with no moving parts.

·         Recommended design ideas for the mechanical housing.

·         Held weekly design reviews and red team reviews with NASA sponsor.

·         Presented project progress to mentors and fellow students at various intervals during design.

Test Engineering Intern (June 2008-August2008)

·         Tested, programmed, debugged, and repaired laser burn-in current drivers, XAUI MIB boards, SFP+ Bert daughter boards, XFP double Bert daughter boards, Mother boards, Universal MIB boards, 10G optical modules for viability, nonlinearities, and amount of noise jitter.

·         Other hardware and software involved in the testing process included: High temperature XFP MIB; XAUI daughter boards; clock synthesizer; 10G Fishbert; Agilent DCA; EXFO test system that included optical switches, variable attenuators, power meters; short and long wave optical fibers.
