OBSERVATORY SUPPORT EXPERIENCE

   Gemini: 

  • Around 40 service observing nights per year. Extensive user support from proposal preparation and observation planning (phase 1 and 2) through data analysis support.
  • Queue Coordinator duties, i.e., responsible for the short term planning of observations involving management of instrument resources and observing time.
  • Experienced with all Gemini North instruments in all modes from optical to mid-IR, including AO and laser guide star observing.
  • Specialized in GMOS support, including mask design for multi-object spectroscopy (MOS).

   European Southern Observatory:

  • Around 280 support nights total at La Silla involving visitor support, service observing, instrument testing, calibration and commissioning.
  • Wide-field imaging, optical high-resolution spectroscopy, IR imaging and spectroscopy with CES, HARPS, FEROS, WFI, and TIMMI2.
  • Instrument Scientist for CES, 2nd Instrument Scientist for FEROS, expert supporter of HARPS. Point of contact for HARPS seismology support.

   Nordic Optical Telescope:

  • Total of 35 nights oftechnical time, service observing, and visitor support.
  • Echelle spectroscopy, imaging, and instrument documentation/technical work with FIES and ALFOSC.

   Training:

   Experience at Gemini Observatory:

  • Initiator and Project Manager for restructuring of Gemini documentation scheme that will help change the culture of the organization: Lead of 5-man working group. Direct supervisor of one employee hired for the project. Responsible for long-term planning, tasks assignment, and obtaining approvals for implementation. Project implements the Drupal content management system in a newly designed information architecture, developed for Gemini by the working group.

   Experience at European Southern Observatory:

  • Instrument Scientist for CES at La Silla from April 2003 -- June 2006. Definition, documentation and implementation of Calibration Plan and Instrument Health Monitoring. Definition and implementation of Calibration Quality Control procedures. Responsible for CES upgrades, incl. commissioning, documentation and definition of new procedures.
  • Project Manager for design and development of new data reduction pipeline for CES. Supervised two students working on the project.
  • Project Scientist for HARPS Calibration Plan. Project Scientist for FEROS Calibration Unit Upgrade Project. Support Scientist CES/HARPS Fiber Adapter Upgrade, HARPS installation and commissioning, characterization of iodine cell for HARPS, and the commissioning of FEROS at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m.

   Experience at Nordic Optical Telescope:

  • FIES (FIber Echelle Spectrograph) Project Scientist: Characterization and modification of telescope adapter unit. Definition and documentation of operating procedures for FIES.

   Science Project Management -- VSOP:

  • PI of VSOP (https://vsop.eso.org). Initiated and drove project through from ESO internal project proposal to current status as a large international collaboration with spectroscopy from ESO, Gemini, and smaller facilities, utilizing an automatic work flow in a state-of-the-art collaborative framework. Continues to delegate and supervise projects within VSOP, as well as driving the strategic planning of the collaboration.

  • Data reduction: IRAF/PyRAF (expert), IDL (intermediate), MIDAS (basic).
  • Programming languages: Perl (expert), Python (intermediate), Fortran90 (intermediate).
