The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy, Science, and Technology (NE) is supporting the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in evaluating space fission power and propulsion systems and technologies [other than those that may be required for the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO) mission] to support the implementation of the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE). NASA will need increased power for propulsion and for surface power applications to support both robotic and human space exploration missions.

Phase I:

As part of a project for the development of nuclear reactor technologies for multi-mission spacecrafts an Annular Linear Induction Pump, also known as EM pump or ALIP, for liquid metals had to be designed. My work consisted in the design, modeling, simulation and construction of a first prototype of an Annular Linear Induction Pump for Reactor Cooling using NaK78.

Phase II:

Concurrently to the end of Phase I (construction), different material properties and construction methods had to be analyzed to better understand the individual components behavior and their interaction during the system operation. Once this transition phase took place the Annular Linear Induction Pump had to be tested in different thermodynamic test loops under different working conditions for the development of improved computational and theoretical models that could lead to the development of optimization algorithms and optimiz
