Thesis title:
“Preliminary design of a bio-regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) technological demo plant for air and water management”
The thesis work is a preliminary design of the atmosphere management and the water management system for a bio-regenerative ECLSS demonstrator plant. The life support system has to control and adjust the atmosphere and water parameter to fulfill the requirements inside the demonstrator that includes men and plants in separate environments. The work aimed at defining the main tasks to be performed for air and water management, followed by a trade-off study among different technologies with a preliminary sizing for the chosen ones.

Principal subjects/occupational skills covered
|
Space scientific knowledge (Mathematics method, gasdynamics, systems and structures); specific space engineering skills like mission analysis, thermo-structural design, propulsive and power subsystem, attitude and orbital control, communication and operation, integration of space systems and after-launch operations.
I was also involved in various project works during my Master Degree:
· Feasibility study of LEGO project (Laser interferometric Earth Geodesy Observer), performed as part of the Space Systems Design course. The project was about two satellites for the refinement of the Earth gravitational potential model. The main characteristics are the formation flight along track architecture for the two satellites and the laser interferometry system. I was in charge of the AOCS subsystem in the project team. The work focused on the preliminary design and sizing of the subsystem including a mathematical model of the environmental disturbance, the sensors and the actuators. (Software used: Matlab/Simulink)
· I was assigned the task of the development of a finite element model of a passenger airplane and static analysis of various sections of the wing and of the fuselage in function of different flight conditions and trim. (Software used: Femap/Nastran)
· I was assigned the task of the development of a mathematical model of the attitude of a geostationary satellite, including environmental disturbances, sensors and actuators. The project was performed as part of the Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics and Control course (Software used: Matlab/Simulink).
· I was assigned the task of the development of a finite element model of a couple of satellites and the satellites-launcher interface structure; the analysis was focused on the verification of the static and dynamic loads during launch. The project was performed as part of the Design of the Aerospace Structures course (Software used: Femap/Nastran).
