    Main activities and responsibilities

    1.        Harmonization and standardization activities of Earth Observation data. SAFE (Standard Archive Format for Europe, http://earth.esa.int/SAFE) has been developed in order to ensure long-term archiving and preservation. It acts as a standard format for archiving and conveying data. SAFE conforms to the ISO 14721:2003 OAIS (Open Archival Information System) reference model and related standards such as the emerging CCSDS/ISO XFDU (XML Formatted Data Units) packaging format. The main responsibilities in this framework are: project management and development of SAFE specification and related software (SAFE Toolbox, SAFE I/O Library, SAFE Converters, SAFE Publisher), collecting Users needs and preparing evolution plan, supporting SAFE Users community.

    2.        Development and maintenance of ESA SAFE website (http://earth.esa.int/SAFE).

    3.        Historical Archive Rationalization and Management (HARM). This system allows the conversion of current Earth observation satellite products from their original format to the specific SAFE format. It performs also an overlap compression by combining a set of overlapping products into a single non-overlapping product. It coordinates and monitors the various HARM activities, launching and stopping the processes that control the execution of these activities, monitoring their progress statuses, handling the flow of messages generated during the HARM system operation, and managing the activities interruptions. The main responsibilities in this framework are: responsible for setting up of the validation campaign, assembly integration and verification, deployment of the system in various ESA facilities, upgrade of the SAFE formats.

    4.        MMFI Automatic Configuration System (MACS) framed within Multi-Mission Facility Infrastructure (MMFI) context. MACS is a configuration control system and provides an integrated environment to configure MMFI Elements, validate MMFI configuration files and propagate parameters changes automatically. The main responsibilities in this framework are: project management, monitoring the system development, system test, system deployment and training.

    5.        MEOS (Multimission Earth Observation System) Polar system: acquisition and processing system for Earth observation satellites data (MODIS, AVHRR, SeaWiFS). The main responsibilities are: project development, quality control of output products during the development phase and check of products definition and specification, assembly integration and verification, deployment of the system in various ESA facilities, responsible for data acquisition and processing phase.
