Senior Spacecraft Controller

LSE Space Engineering and Operations is looking for experienced Spacecraft Controllers.

Task description

The candidate shall operate all or part of the mission system, which may incorporate parts of the ground segment as well as the space segment, as specified for each mission. The positions could cover pre and post launch activities.

For Pre-launch tasks, the candidate will be required to assist in configuring and testing the operational system to support the operations. The Contractor may be required to develop methods or tools to assist in the execution of the operations.

It shall be required that the candidate becomes familiar with the mission and the control facilities at his disposal. He/she will take part in simulations and pre-launch test campaigns, and in post-launch refresher training and simulation.

Post launch, the candidate will:

• monitor and control all operational progress, in accordance with the scheduled operations plan, ensuring that safety criteria are respected and that all operations are conducted in accordance with the established procedures;
• perform specific operations relating to individual missions, as defined in the operations plans, or as instructed by the responsible SOM, SOE or Analyst;
• immediately inform the responsible personnel when an anomaly is detected, in accordance with the established procedures;
• take corrective action as necessary, applying the contingency/ emergency procedures approved for the mission;
• coordinate with the responsible personnel for any scheduling required;
• prepare operations reports as requested;
• assist in the production of printouts, graphs and plots for off-line evaluation and analysis;
• prepare and complete all necessary forms for the daily operations routine.

During the routine phase of a mission, the candidate shall follow regular training and simulations for the in-orbit spacecraft. It covers training to keep staff proficient, and training on new operational procedures. These trainings will be given by the appropriate Spacecraft Analyst and/or Spacecraft Operations Engineer. Regular use of a spacecraft simulator is to be planned for, but it has to be considered essential to the continued successful operation of a mission, but has a lower priority than operational tasks.

Depending of the mission to be assigned and mission phase, the required support could be done in a shift rota to continuously have 24 hours manning team or normal office hours, with occasional shifts or overtime during special or critical activities such as pre-launch tests and simulations.

Qualifications

• A good background in a scientific or technical discipline is necessary, to the level equivalent to Senior Technician.
• Experience operating spacecraft or related ground systems is mandatory.
• Experience with using computer systems is required, and experience in data communication and/or ground station systems is an advantage.
• Knowledge of spacecraft control systems such as SCOS 2000 is highly desirable.
• The Contractor should be able to demonstrate an orderly, reliable and disciplined approach to the execution of operations and be capable of working calmly and correctly under stress.

Location:

The work will be performed at site of one of our customers in Germany, either at the European Space Operations Center (ESOC), Darmstadt or German Space Operations Center (GSOC), Wessling.
