A recent decision to create a Centre of Competence for Spacecraft Structures has opened up exciting new opportunities particularly in Earth Observation and Science Projects. Earth Observation and Scientific satellite structures are typically custom designed using advanced lightweight materials and are up to 5 metres high.
A Lead Structures Engineer is required to coordinate design and development aspects of a satellite structure. He/she will operate in a project focused concurrent engineering team covering the whole life of a satellite structure from conceptual design through detail design and analysis, manufacture and test. Project durations are typically 3 years.

Tasks
Lead and coordinate the definition of the major design structural concepts and materials based on customer and environmental constraints and taking into account material, design, manufacture and test cost and risk.
Coordinate the day to day working of the design team ensuring a consistent and cost effective approach
Working closely with the Lead Manufacturing Engineer ensure the design programme is optimised to build schedule requirements recognising component and material lead times
Manage and expedite development testing
Support to Major Structural Test Requirement
Drawing approval
Control of own team cost and schedule performance
Support to customer and subcontractor liaison as technical lead
Skills
A minimum of 5 years post graduate industrial experience in the Aerospace or Composites industry or equivalent
A good understanding of load paths, structural concepts and material properties for lightweight metallic and composite structures.
At least 2 years post graduate experience as a Stress Engineer is desirable
General computer skills for analysis and report writing
