Employment History
2009- Software Engineer ESA - INTEGRAL, Madrid (integral.esa.int)
The Integral Science Operations Centre (ISOC) employs several astronomers and two software engineers to perform the scientific operation of the gamma ray space telescope INTEGRAL.
My role is to maintain and develop software solutions used in the ISOC team. Mission critical is the planning software, used by scientist to direct the spacecraft’s observation activity each 3-day orbit. Associated to this is a web application to allow the scientific community to see the current planning state. The planning system is tightly integrated with the communications infrastructure to the control centre and the flight dynamics software for orbital calculations.
Every year the ISOC provides software tools to enable the community to submit scientific proposals for the coming cycle of observations using INTEGRAL’s instruments. The tools are partly stand-alone and partly web based applications for a large number of users as well as an online rating application used by the committee that have the final say in the acceptance of these proposals.
The software team is also responsible for the computing environment’s life cycle planning and supports the local scientific data archive efforts.
A total of 15 separate applications fall under our responsibility, and involves the Java platform, Oracle and MySQL databases, PHP and both Linux and Solaris.
