    Description  We managed to enlarge the simulation capability envelope of the Plasmatron facility for extra-planetary re-entry missions, reaching the highest heat flux ever measured at VKI, and studying the boundary layer with  optical  diagnostic.

Object of the thesis was the optimization of testing experimental setup regarding optical instruments (thermo- cameras and pyrometers) in "SCIROCCO", the most powerful arcjet plasma wind tunnel in the world. We tested with success the innovative re-entry capsule IRENE, and we performed a thermographic analysis of the surface.
