Research Physicist – Optics
(April 2008 to April 2012) References available upon request.
Duties related to the study and optimization of linear and nonlinear optical behavior in condensed matter and devices (e.g., glasses, crystals, polymers, liquids, and optical fibers). This required both collaboration and independent study of the collected data, literature, and possible physical processes involved. Research typically involves the use of the following equipment:
· Continuous Wave and Class IV Pulsed Lasers
· Numerous Optical Elements (Optics Table)
· Power Probes/Meters
· Customized Analysis Software
· Calibrated Astronomy-Grade CCDs
· Electron Microscope
All solids were prepared for study through tooling, optical grade polishing, acid etching, sputter-coating, and/or thermal annealing. Once prepared, the sample’s linear optical properties were characterized and catalogued. High energy nonlinear optical tests were then performed and the data analyzed via Mathematica, Excel, or other analysis software. Sample turnover was very rapid. Occasionally, I fabricate prototype devices to better understand device integration issues.
Experimental configurations changed frequently—necessitating efficient and effective alignments, calibrations, and upgrades. One such upgrade I implemented was a gradient optical density aperture, for which I invented a new (low cost) fabrication technique. Gradient density apertures provide a custom-shaped focal spot. The proper characterization of a beam profile is necessary for accurate interpretations.
Work pertained to specific military applications. Secret clearance was maintained, reports were submitted quarterly and yearly, and test data was logged continuously. PowerPoint presentations to the government and collaborators were often necessary.
US Army, Ft. Benning, GA; Officer Candidate
(February 2007 to August 2007)
Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS; Physics Lab Instructor
(Fall 2004, Spring 2005, Fall 2005)References available upon request.
I instructed students on how to perform various lab experiments. It was often necessary to review or even teach the relevant physical phenomenon.
