I was employed by the Boeing Company for the past 15 years. My title was “Technical Advisor for the Space Based Space Surveillance program”.
I recently worked on the new Space Based Space Surveillance or SBSS. My primary responsibilities were to advise the military crews on all actions and situations pertaining to the full operations of a satellite program. I am certified in Ground and Satellite command and control; and knowledgeable with payload operations. I have been on this program since development, and I have trained mission operation crews that now sit console. Currently those of us in Operations Engineering advise the total crew force, but we can and have stepped in to assume crew positions when needed.
Immediately after launch my primary responsibilities were to exercise the bugs out of this position and then to train Air Force Officers and Enlisted to assume control of this position as we (Boeing Operations) took a more advisory role on the day to day operations of this program.
Prior to launch, my job was more in the role of an analyst/developer in the Research and Development side of this program, which we developed from scratch. I have developed operational procedures and also data compatibility tests. We performed these tests in order to gauge the ground software and hardware against the Ball satellite configuration, while still on the ground. We had to test and configure our ground system using the Air Force satellite Communications Network. A great deal of time went into developing procedure and software for our ground command and control, especially on such a tight budget.
Before I joined the SBSS team back in September 2008, I had been working in Aurora at the ADF on a Boeing System for 11 years. I was completing training for certification as a lead on the classified Boeing System when the request came for me to join the SBSS team. Prior to training as a Lead, I sat “on the Operations floor” as an operator in an “Online” position, and before that I started out in the Boeing “Offline” position, which is jargon for Computer Controller.
All total I have 5 satellite programs in my career with greater than 21 years of actual experience in training and Satellite Operations. I am very excited and looking forward to my sixth program.
