    Professional Experience

    '07-12 Senior Systems Engineer at Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd.

    • Lead technical engineer for Sapphire (Space Surveillance) from Kick-Off to delivery. Accountable for systems design through all phases including AIT. I wrote and performed spacecraft level test procedures and was responsible for the verification of platform requirements.

    • Commissioning engineer for NigeriaSat-X (Earth Observation & Training).

    • Liaison engineer for US mission prospects between SSTL-UK and SST-US in Denver.

    Group Project: Precursor Rendezvous for Impact Mitigation of Asteroids (PRIMA)

    • The team of 8 designed a Phase-A mission concept to rendezvous with an asteroid, investigate its physical properties and alter its orbit.

    • Responsibilities included trade-off analysis of mitigation strategies, operations and systems engineering.

    • Conclusion: defining the internal structure is required before explosively altering an orbit. Electric propulsion is the preferred method to demonstrate the concept for cost-effectiveness and safety. Spacecraft mass: 675 kg (20% margin).

      Thesis: Refinement of MUSTANG-0 Nanosatellite Design

    A breadboard power system for a nano-sat was constructed with four power buses: 11.25 V (unregulated) and 7.5 V, 5.0 V and 3.3 V (regulated). Power efficiencies were between 36.5% and 78.6%.

    '03-06 BSc Physics 1st Class Honours Royal Holloway University of London
                Trent University, Ontario, Canada (integral 2nd year)
                Core Modules: Quantum Mechanics, Teaching Physics, Energy, Mechanics, Nuclear & Particle Physics,                   Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism.
                Major Project (UK): Improving the Efficiency of a Solar Water Heater

    Investigating and testing heat losses from a home-built solar water heating system. Overall efficiency was improved from 16% to 46%. Future work on optimising motor control and valves was proposed.

                 Individual Project (Canada): The Construction of a Wavemeter for Frequency Calibration

    A flip-flop control circuit was prototyped and a support frame was constructed for a linear actuator which lead to a patented laser calibration tool.

    At university I was the Health & Safety rep, Class rep, Student/Staff Committee Chairman, Study Abroad Ambassador and was awarded a bursary for my BSc. Associate member of the Institute of Physics since 2003.

    I have lived in Australia, Papua New Guinea, the U.S.A., Peru, Chile, and Canada and am always keen to travel. I play a range of guitar styles from Flamenco to Heavy Metal and enjoy cooking and tutoring maths. I regularly keep fit with mountain biking, Krav Maga and CrossFit. I have coached and played American Football and am a triathlon marshal.
