Twice as big as Earth, the super-Earth 55 Cancri e was thought to have lava flows on its surface. The planet is so close to its star, the same side of the planet always faces the star, such that the planet has permanent day and night sides. Based on a 2016 study using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists speculated that lava would flow freely in lakes on the starlit side and become hardened on the face of perpetual darkness. The lava on the dayside would reflect radiation from th...

Today, NASA launched NOAA's next-generation polar satellite, the Joint Polar Satellite System-1, into space. Two Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) weather programs are mission-critical components of the satellite's mission: the JPSS Common Ground System and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite sensor. Svalbard, Norway, is home to part of a global network of receiving stations that process and distribute polar satellite data to users worldwide. Landing on Mars is difficult and not always successful. Well-designed advance testing helps. An ambitious NASA Mars rover mission set to launch in 2020 will rely on a special parachute to slow the spacecraft down as it enters the Martian atmosphere at over 12,000 mph (5.4 kilometers per second). Preparations for this mission have provided, for the first time, dramatic video of the parachute opening at supersonic speed. The Mars 2020 mission will seek signs of ancient Martian life by investiga...

The U.S. Navy's Communications Satellite Program Office, PMW 146, and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) handed over full operational control of the fifth Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite to the Naval Satellite Operations Center (NAVSOC). The October 11 milestone followed the successful completion of the MUOS-5 satellite's on-orbit testing and delivery of all operational products needed to "fly" the satellite. In April, the Navy, working with Army Forces Strategic Command (ARSTRAT), con...

A temperate Earth-sized planet has been discovered only 11 light-years from the Solar System by a team using ESO's unique planet-hunting HARPS instrument. The new world has the designation Ross 128 b and is now the second-closest temperate planet to be detected after Proxima b. It is also the closest planet to be discovered orbiting an inactive red dwarf star, which may increase the likelihood that this planet could potentially sustain life. Ross 128 b will be a prime target for ESO's Extremely ...

What seemed at first like a rare instance of a huge, ancient galaxy revealed itself to be an even rarer pair of extremely massive galaxies, seen on the brink of merging when the Universe was only a billion years old. This outstanding source was first identified by ESA's Herschel space observatory, and later exposed in greater detail with the ground-based Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. The earliest galaxies in the 13.8 billion-year history of our cosmos starte...

    Research Work
    1. Ph.D Thesis Work (2010 onwards): Millimeter Wave Laboratory,
Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Roorkee
Title: Investigation on Specific Microstrip Filters with Defected Ground
    Supervisors: Dr.M.V.Kartikeyan
Brief Description: Filter is the very essential component of communication system
with compact size to the conventional counterpart. In the new era of Wireless
communication, the filter should be compact, low profile with sharp transitions. So
the design parameters should be chosen in such a manner that the overall
performance such as VSWR, impedance bandwidth, return loss, insertion loss,
suppressed harmonics etc. given by the filter should be better. For this
purpose, I am working on the filter size reduction techniques, multiband design
techniques, bandwidth enhancement techniques, etc. The artificial neural network
(ANN) is being used for the analysis of microstrip filters, Wave iterative method is
being used for analysis of Microstrip. In addition the one dimensional photonic
band gap structures called defected ground structure (DGS) is also used and
incorporated in the microstrip filters for the further improvement of filters
properties such as size reduction, Bandwidth enhancement, sharp transitions,
    higher order mode suppression.
Design study of some specific microstrip filters like low pass, high pass,
band-pass, band-stop, CSRR filters, and tunable filters along with the defected
ground structure has been carried out as the research work. As the DGS has also
been used in the design of antennas; Multiband antennas with different
topologies and not much work has been reported by the researchers in this
regard. Therefore it becomes necessary to see the effect of the DGS in
specific filters and to study their performances. The simulation process is
done by the CST microwave studio, ADS, and Ansoft HFSS. Measurement
and fabrication is also being carried out. Further the study on numerical
techniques such as FDTD, MOM, and FEM etc have also been carried out.
In addition some mini projects are completed:
    1. Design of a filter calculator using MATLAB.
    2. Design of Microstrip Bandpass filter at for WiMax applications.
    3. Design of Microstrip seven pole low pass filter for WLAN applications.
    4. Design of Equal-split Wilkinson power divider.
    5. Design of a 50 ohm line branch line coupler.
    6. Design of a 20dB single-section backward coupling microstrip line.
    2. M.Tech Thesis Work (2008-10): Microwave Laboratory, Department of Electronics
and Communication Engineering, Graphic Era University, Dehradun
Title: Design of microstrip seven pole low pass filter with defected ground
    Supervisor: Dr.R.Gowri
Brief Description: A Problem related on the design of a seven pole low
pass filter for sharp transitions with size reduction to conventional type
filter with hexagonal metal shaped DGS and comparison of the various
topologies of DGS for wireless applications such as WLAN, WiMAX and Wi-
Fi. 2. Design various type of DGS shape using only the
50 ohm line and the DGS slot is etched in the ground plane of the
Microstrip line and study of their characteristics the results of this proposed
hexa-metal shaped DGS shows the very sharp transition comparison to the
convention seven pole Microstrip filter with large bandwidth and high power
handling capacity and all the simulations are carried out using Ansoft HFSS
V10. The important factor to use the DGS structure is to reduce the size of
    filter up-to 70 percent.
