      Integration and V&V Leader on EDRS-MOC


    Redu Space Services


    RSS is in charge of the turn-key Project Management, Design, Development, Assembly, Integration and Validation of the EDRS-MOC (European Data Relay System - Mission Operation Centre).

    RSS will deliver a customized innovative MOC to meet the requirements for the EDRS Programme:


    - Management of the Consortium of Suppliers (Spacebel, SES Techcom, Edisoft).

    - Delivery of 2 MOC (Germany and Redu).

    -  Maintenance and Operations.


    The European Data Relay System (EDRS) will be an independent, European satellite system designed to reduce time delays in the transmission of large quantities of data.

    In particular, RSS leads a consortium consisting of Spacebel (Belgium), Edisoft (Portugal) & Deimos (Portugal) and SES TechCom (Luxembourg) for the design, development, testing and delivery of the EDRS Mission Operation Centre (MOC). The prime system will be installed at EADS Astrium’s facilities in Ottobrunn/ Germany, whereas a backup system will be installed and operated by RSS from the ESA station in Redu.

    RSS will also be in charge for the lifetime maintenance and backup operations of the MOC system. This operational phase will involve the 24/7 operators shift team and the IT, logistic and maintenance teams.

    The main activities covered by the System Engineer are:

    · Provision of support and advice to the EDR-MOC Team

    - Leaders for all issues related to Ground Segment Integration and V&V as well as support for the GSVT activities

    · Contribution to the production and updates of the Ground Segment V&V High Level


    · Generation of the detailed Ground Segment V&V tests specification as a collobaration between Integration and Verification and Validation approaches.

    · Definition and support to the development of test tools and test data sets required for the activities

    · Leading and support for the preparation and the execution of the Ground Segment Integration and V&V test procedures

    · Leading the coordination of the testing, including daily/weekly meeting, the analysis of test results and the preparation of the test reports

    · Contribution to the definition of the Overall System Validation Test Plan

    · Support to the identification and the assessment of risks related to Integration and V&V activities and implementation of mitigation measures

    · Monitor and, where applicable, steering the lifecycle for all related anomaly reports (ARs) /non-conformance reports (NCRs)

    The main objective of the System Engineering function is to lead the Task3 Activity of the project.

    The objective of this task is to develop an easy-to-use interface and preliminary set of visualisation tools supporting a forecaster in rapid analysis of latest space weather data. The tool and interface is based on an overall space weather event timeline and allow easy visualisation of solar images, heliospheric, magnetospheric, ionospheric and geomagnetic data coupled with overlays of relevant context. The activity is focus on developing the interactive timeline user interface and tools with a view to incorporating further more advanced tools and underpinning models in future activities. The toolkit is implemented as additional functionality to the SSA-SWE Service Portal.

    The main activities covered by the System Engineering are:

    - Review of user and system requirements

    - Provide Software Development Plan, Software Verification and Validation Plan, Software     Requirements Specification, Interface Control Document, Software Design Document, Software Validation Specification, Software Validation Report, Software User Manual

    - Provide build files, source code, test data and scripts, software installed, installation kit

    - Implement and support during the FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), AR1 (acceptance review at ESAC Testing Environment), AR2 (final acceptance review at REDU Operational Environment)

    The main activities covered by the System Engineering were:

    - SWE Service Test Suite for non-regression tests and installer and Test Report;

    - Support for integration and deployment;

    - Software requirements for the Space Weather Portal affecting the Assets;

    0 Review the requirements for the integration on SWE portal (SRS, ICD, SUM, SVS, SVR, SCF, SReID);

    - Ensure functionality of interfaces to external providers (if any)

    - Perform minor software developments to comply with requirements and interface with the portal;

    - Provide input to the SLA/OLA (Service Level Agreement/Operational Service Agreement) from second level support;

    - Modify, adapt and complete the documentation as per specified requirement and rules;

    - Provide service application datapack: source code, makefile, and installation procedures;

    The OSD (Operations Service Desk) is not a help desk for users.

    The OSD includes a first level Service Desk, System Engineering to provide Anomaly investigation and resolution as well as change impact analysis, Common Services for all PDS elements (including Multi-Mission Facility Infrastructure configuration and maintenance, support to Operational Centres, Network and Security maintenance) and Overall Service management for all the service domains in the PDS Operations and Maintenance Contract.

    The objective of the System Engineering function is to ensure the various elements of the overall EO PDS function together to provide efficient and smooth day-to-day operations, as well as to provide the engineering management of the overall system.

    The main projects impacted were the EOLI systems (Eoli-SA and Eoli-Server), HMA and UM-SSO.

    System Engineering also provides an effective and efficient second and third level support for Anomaly investigation and resolution, support to Operational Centres and Operator consortium, Change Request impact analysis, etc. In addition, the System Engineering function provides the main technical interface to ESA for the overall Operations and Maintenance service – supporting progress meetings, joint Change Control Boards (J-CCBs), scheduling meetings, Transfer To Operations (TTO), etc

The activity covers all the software used on User Services and Mission Planning for the MUIS Ground Segment Systems which includes EOLI systems (Eoli-SA and Eoli-Server), HMA and UM-SSO.

    Meanwhile the activity covers also the validation and support to operation of Mission planning tools.

    As well it also included engineering support to Ground Segment Operations for the relevant systems, to:

    - Definition of User & Software requirements

    - Maintenance of Test Specifications

    - Acceptance testing of SW deliveries (including documentation)

    - Management of Change Requests (CR) and Non Conformance Requests (NCR)

    Meanwhile the activity covers the support to operations for the new missions already mentioned and the management of CRs and NCRs.

    The activity includes also the Integration on new Missions and its management on Configuration Control (CVS), using the CVS as tool for the configuration control.

    The integration activity of new missions and evolution project is performed by teleconf with the client ESA and the software house TAITUS to plan the software released, the acceptation test plan and the transfer to operation plan to ESA users by DVD production.

    The AIV activity is plan by weekly meeting with particular attention to critical/blocking release.

    Moreover the activity includes the Integration of new Missions to be configured on MMFI and USMP functional areas and to be validated performing an End-to-End Test following Operational Scenario for the specific mission.

The activity covered the reception of software upgrades and corrections after successful factory acceptance test for on-site acceptance testing and operational integration. As well it also included engineering support to operations for the relevant systems, to:

    - Analyse anomaly reports

    - Identify the subsystem causing the anomaly and provide the relevant diagnostic

    - Analyse change requests

    The system was developed using JAVA, C++ and XML technologies. The operating system was before a SUN after that is was migrating to a Linux cluster. The main activity was developed Applet for system testing and Swing programs. I was part of AIV (Acceptance, Integration and Validation) team managing all the subsystems and performing the migration to the LINUX platform supporting the ROM team for the transfer to the operation
