Project description: Breadboard testing of an innovative carbon fiber axially-grooved heat-pipe for space or zero-gravity environments. Structural and thermal characteristics of the device are assessed in order to define the potential design approach and the optimal operational ranges.

Ph.D. thesis work: Experimental study on a pulsating heat-pipe cooler for power electronics
Project motivation: Among the state of the art solutions for power electronics and micro-electronics cooling, pulsating heat pipes are cheap and easy to manufacture. They offer great advantages in terms of energy savings but further investigation is still required to turn this technology into a marketable product.
Project description: An extensive experimental analysis of the thermal and hydraulic behavior of a PHP prototype was carried out using advanced measurement techniques. The thermal performances of the system were investigated helping to define a potential design approach for the final product. Moreover, insights were gained on the heat and mass transfer mechanism responsible for the system operation.
Responsibilities: Responsible for designing, manufacturing and assembling of the experimental set-up including costing and purchase of laboratory equipment through direct communication with suppliers. Formation and management of students (bachelor and master) in the framework of semester projects and laboratory teaching.

Internship (master thesis): Experimental study of the effectiveness of thermosyphon heat exchangers
An effectiveness-NTU model had been analytically derived and experimentally validated for the case
of two-phase closed loop thermosyphons. It has been implemented in the simulation code used for
the design of the device which is now commercialized.
Aug. – Sept. 2010: EPFL – Laboratory for Industrial Energy Systems (LENI)
Internship: Implementation of the model of a heat pump data-base allowing the systematic integration of such device in energy intensive industrial processes, allowing heat recovery, energy efficiency optimization with consequent decrease in operating costs and pollutant emissions.
July – Aug. 2008: ENEL Brasil s.r.l. – Rio de Janeiro
Internship: Design of Heat Exchanger (HE) for turbine lubricant cooling: a new disposition of the HE has been introduced to improve heat exchange in conditions of low temperature difference. Due to the high efficiency of the system the same project has been applied as a replacement for cooling systems in other power plants.
