    Recent Employment

Centre for Quantum Technologies Feb 2013 – Feb 2015

    Research Assistance - Mechanical Engineering

Continuing my work with the research centre, I joined Dr Alexander Ling quantum optics research group, focusing on matters relating to mechanical engineering. The immediate task was to design a palm-sized alignment system for optical components to perform quantum entanglement. The complete package with electronics will be a scientific payload for a nano-satellite. My responsibility in the project includes carrying out thermal & vibration analysis and testing for space qualification, ensuring the light-tightness of the optical device, designing an enclosure for high-altitude weather balloon test as well as handling the interfaces with the nano-satellite chassis. Here is the link to the publication on the work done for this project: http://www.nature.com/srep/2014/140915/srep06366/full/srep06366.html.  Other on-going works involve design a Risley prism beam steering device & making prototypes of nano-satellite chassis.

    Research Support - Mechanical Designer

Fondly known as “the coolest place on the equator”, this research centre, hosted by the National University of Singapore, brought together quantum physicists and computer scientists from all around the globe. I have the privilege to support 7 experimental groups with custom mechanical designs for the various components required to setup their labs. Ranging by a fine adjustment mechanism for compensation crystal, to a 24 viewports main vacuum chamber, I am closely involved with the researchers to determine their needs and assist the visualization of the eventual experiment setups. At the same time, I liaised with the vendors to make sure that the designed parts are properly machined and assembled before passing on to the experimentalists.

    Shimano (Singapore) Pte Ltd Jul 2003 – Jul 2004, Mar 2006 – Jun 2010

    Senior Engineer R&D (Bike)

The renowned Japanese bicycle components manufacturer, Shimano is a name all cyclists know. Its products ranged from high-end grade used by world-class competitors to leisure riders for simple pleasures, and trusted with the quality and reliability standards. My role involves in research, conceptualise, modelling, prototyping, testing, evaluating, generating parts and assembly drawings, as well as BOM and documentation of the design phase. As the product evolves into production phase, it is also my responsibility to support Quality and Production department, including assembly line troubleshooting. Apart from development of new products, I have to take care of a few current products, as well as making progress presentation to fellow colleagues and related department heads. Upon rejoining Shimano in 2006 to 2010, I had involvement in various products, with 2 of them, from the initial conceptual to mass production. For one of the product, I have attained a patent for its completely new mechanism design (European Patent: 0711904.5-1254, USPTO: 8,096,208 B2).

    Personal Development

    a2e (Arctic Circle to Equator) Cycling Journey Co-organiser & Cyclist Aug 2004 – Jan 2006 

For almost 18 months, I cycled with a friend starting from the Arctic Circle in Finland, down into Eastern Europe, headed across Central Asia, turned into the Indian Sub-Continent, passed through parts of China and finally reached South-East Asia, and arrived back to Singapore. A total of 26 countries marked in my passport and approximately 23 500 km were recorded, along with a handful of cuts & bruises, and tonnes of amazing memories. We pedaled across the 4 seasons, over harsh weather conditions, from the freezing cold of –8 °C to a scorching heat of 47 °C. Nonetheless the highlight of the experience has to be the close contacts with the various people we came across along the way. Throughout the journey we had 2 hotel stays, while some nights were spent in the great outdoors, police stations, fire station, farmhouse, most of the time, we were put up in the warmth of the local homes. Their generosity, hospitality and friendship truly made this journey a lifetime experience.

    Raleigh International Expedition 01E Raleigh Mongolia : Venturer 15 Apr – 24 Jun 2001 

The 10 weeks Raleigh Mongolia expedition provided a demanding training ground for an individual. I was constantly stimulated by the staff, other Venturers and most significantly, Mother Nature to better myself in all situations. On occasions when I was designated leader for the day, I had to work out the various tasks to accomplish, delegate them to my fellow Venturers, and ensure functionality and motivating each to fulfil their duties.
