Profile More than 40 years of experience in the international space industry as a technical expert and entrepreneur. He has formed successful space businesses and secured business growth. He has been engaged by a number of prestigious organisations, such as the UK Space Agency, InnovateUK and the European Commission in a range of roles including advanced technology development projects. He has sponsored academic research into advanced computer communication technologies and successfully managed space industry links with academia.
During his career, he formed collaborative teams to secure work in the space industry. He has participated in a number of space commercial bid evaluation activities and has supported the end-customer in a range of on-site support roles, ensuring that satellite systems are rigorously designed, built and tested. Worked both In Europe and in North America - where he contributed to a range of US satellite systems and their deployment. Respected Project Manager on many assignments over the last twenty-five years. He has managed projects in the US as well as the United Kingdom in the Space and IT industry sectors, ensuring project success and customer satisfaction.
Actively involved in a number of UK space programmes and initiatives, such as the formative UK Government's Innovation and Growth Team for Space; UK Space Agency’s Space Project Review Panel; Satellite Applications Catapult Advisory Group; Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) competitive tender assessment processes, and is a current Member of UKSpace SME Forum. He is a past Chair of the Satellite Systems & Applications executive committee of the IET.
Responsibilities and Achievements
2011 – Present Managing Director, High Q Systems Ltd.
Formed High Q Systems in 2011 to continue to undertake space systems consultancy assignments, to provide space business management services and continue his involvement in space community development programmes. For example, he has been involved in the UK Space Agency funding stream evaluations (SPRP). He has been involved in the UK Government Innovation and Growth Team and Technology Strategy Board assessment teams. He has held various roles in advanced satellite communications and launch vehicle development programmes where he has worked with senior management representatives in a consultancy role. He has also undertaken a number of space projects in and around the Harwell campus, including a market survey for a new Flatsat facility on site.
2012 – 2014 CEO, Interasight Ltd.
Co-founded Interasight to take advantage of space imaging techniques in and around the Harwell community and to adapt them for the food industry. He took the business through the government's GrowthAccelerator process for high-growth businesses. He secured several high-value, matched-funding and development grant opportunities such as Innovation for Space, Nutrition for Life and Space Launchpad. He successfully managed the business through its incubation period at Harwell, providing a sound basis for further business growth - including a nomination of the company as one of the Venturefest Oxford Future 50 companies to watch.
2007 – 2011 Business Development Manager, ABSL Space Products, Culham, Oxfordshire
Responsible for growing ABSL's earth observation satellite instrumentation business, multiplying order intake by a factor of three during this period. This enabled a 10-member, dedicated instrumentation product team to be supported. While at ABSL, led sales and business development activities across the space instrumentation side of the business in calibration sources, LIDAR and deployable structures. He also project managed several projects on Airbus, Surrey Satellite Technology and European Space Agency projects, managing multidisciplinary delivery teams.
2002 – 2007 Payload Engineering Manager, Astrium Ltd. (Contract Assignment)
Retained on contract by Astrium Ltd initially as technical design authority and team leader for the SHF payload of Skynet 5, a military communications satellite system. He drove forward the technical solution for the SHF payload over a five year period and established and maintained supplier and customer relations. He also provided a single-point-of-contact for the engineering aspects of the SHF payload, including presentations to all contractual levels from the internal Astrium customer organisation up to and including the UK MoD. He was then promoted to Payload Engineering Manager, responsible for all engineering aspects of the satellite’s payload systems for later spacecraft models.
1998 - 2002 Logica UK Ltd
Senior project manager, responsible for a number of high profile assignments within Logica’s Telecoms Solutions and Space Divisions. During this time, he acted as Customer Representative at Astrium, monitoring the design and development of an X-Band satellite terminal for the Nimrod (MRA4) aircraft upgrade. Working with sales and bid management teams, he also supported the deployment of Logica's delivery teams across several industry sectors, including space, telecoms and IT.
1987 - 1998 Founder, Managing Consultant and Director, Communications & Technology Consultants, Oxford, UK
Formed CTC to provide consultancy expertise to a range of satellite systems operators, prime contractors and agencies. He was retained as technical consultant for three international satellite competitive tender evaluations such as Inmarsat 3, advising clients on bid strengths and weaknesses. He also led various customer teams in a range of satellite development projects and investigations, including international satellite frequency coordination negotiations with the UK authorities and with Russia. He provided technical consultancy services to the European Commission (DG-XIII), Eutelsat, ASI and other space agencies.
1981 - 1987 Project Manager, Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT), Palo Alto, CA and Princeton, NJ
As Member of Technical Staff, responsible for analysing, witnessing, verification of and reporting on the communications performance of eight Intelsat V/VA satellites being manufactured in California. Then promoted to Project Manager for Comsat’s STC-DBS direct broadcast satellite payloads. Had management responsibility as end-customer representative for the procurement of two multi-million dollar direct-broadcast communication satellites in Princeton, New Jersey.
1979 - 1981 Field RF Engineer, Telesat Canada, Ottawa, Canada
Acted as customer representative at equipment suppliers in Germany, Canada and the United States. He also formed part of the monitoring team in the field office at Hughes Aircraft Company for the ANIK C/D communications satellites. 1977 - 1979 RF Engineer, Space Engineering Division, MSDS, Stanmore, Middx. During this period of employment, designed and tested a number of microwave circuits for satellite equipment, including MIC frequency multipliers, filters and amplifiers.
1976 - 1977 Senior Engineer, Cable and Wireless Ltd., London
Specified and procured equipment for satellite ground station upgrades and carried out site surveys for new satellite systems on behalf of the company.
