    The European Southern Observatory wanted to redevelop their Scientific Archive; a repository for all the astronomy observations made with their optical and radio telescopes. The current archive had evolved and there existed many fragmented elements to the solution..

    •  My role was to elicit the requirements for the new system and develop a coherent UML based framework that would support current, future and over the horizon archive assets and capabilities.

    Ø       System requirements elicitation (using DOORS).

    Ø       Ada95/83 implementation under Unix of Harel statecharts and Saturn (Frequency hopping) functionality.

    Ø       Design of approximately 100 formal subsystem (CSCI) tests

    Ø       Design and development of a small test oriented meta language.

    Ø       Development of a Python based parser to automatically generate test executables from the meta language based test design document.

    Ø       Augmentation of existing python test environment to analyse 1553 bus traffic.

    Ø       Extension of C++ classes for Ethernet Packet/SMB file sniffing on dual redundant bus architecture and subsequent integration into python based test environment.

    Ø       Work products developed primarily under DO178B exploiting Linux and to a lesser extent Windows. Clearcase, Clearquest, Aonix Ada, Greenhills C++, VxWorks, Python were all exploited in this development targeted at multiple PowerPC processors.

    II, Belgium        OO Architect/Developer        8/95 to 4/07

    Small software house specialising in Real-time and Object Oriented technology.

    •  Participation in an EU Research Framework project, “CALIM”, investigating the possibility of automating/supporting the migration of legacy systems to new service oriented architectures. Development of ‘Use Case state equivalence’ techniques to show/allow the incremental transition between legacy and new solutions. Unfortunately the Prime member of the consortium decided, part way through the project, to withdraw and the project was suspended.

    •  Analysis and design of DASA’s (now EADS) ‘entry level’ Air Traffic Management solution using DO-178B, Visual C++, UML, CORBA (Orbix2), OEW, Rational ROSE, POET OODBMS and McCabe toolset. Elicitation of requirements, analysis, architecting and CORBA consultancy on this large (400+ problem space classes) ATM system. Led team of 5.

    •  Development of a bespoke Resource Profiler suite of software.

    Ø       The system aims to ‘scientifically analyse’ a candidates CV (without imposing ANY formatting restrictions on the CV layout) by using time-series signal processing and ‘kalman filter tracking’ techniques to create both technical and personality profile predictions that are compared against representations of both the job request and stereotypical profiles.

    Ø       This is realised as a collection of some 30 or so large-grained components and workflow managers, that collectively parse and (re)profile up to 4000 CVs per day; transparently maintaining contact with the consultants; intelligently searching for new candidates using ‘Balanced Scorecard’ techniques; managing the legal aspects necessary for consultancy missions; organising consultancy reviews and arranging invoices/payments.

    Ø       The components were developed in Visual Basic, VBA (for Word, Access, Excel and Outlook), T-SQL Stored procedures, Triggers, SQL Server 2000, Webl and Rebol.

    Ø       In addition a set of framework components have been developed that transparently load balance the deployment of the components amongst a ‘farm’ of servers allowing 24x7 operation with minimal intervention.

    •  Development and initial deliveries of the following II training courses’ : “Introduction to Object technology”; “Business Process Modelling with UML”; “Object based analysis and Design with UML”; “Component Modelling”; “OO Design patterns”; “OO Development Process”; “Designing CORBA based solutions”; “Orbix/C++ implementation”, “C++ Prog.     Eurocontrol, Netherlands           OO Analyst/Designer           11/92 to 8/95

    The existing monolithic Air Traffic Control (ATC) system for the Benelux countries and northern Germany was being replaced with a distributed Client-Server OO architecture to be developed using Coad/Yourdon, Booch93, CRC, IBM RISC 6000, AIX, Interleaf, STP RT, STP OOSD, VADS Ada, Atherton backplane, CRI SDE, Superproject. Target was DEC Alpha.

    •  Requirements elicitation and analysis of the Radar Data Processing Domain. The domain included plot to track correlation and creation, Manoeuvre detection, Radar and RADNET management. Approximately 600 requirements were discovered through discussion with Radar domain experts and examination of the existing system’s code and documentation. Structuring of the requirements and use of State Transition diagrams, to precisely define the system’s complex control philosophies. Analysis of the system’s problem domain component yielded approximately 220 classes and 140 scenarios. Identification of key abstractions. Analysis of Primary and Secondary scenarios to assign responsibilities using Class Responsibility Collaborator (CRC) techniques. Reuse of Object Role and collaboration patterns. Integration of control and behaviour via State Event Matrices.

    Nord Micro, Germany           Test Consultant           5/92 to 11/92

    Development of a safety critical (RTCA/DO-178B Level A) fully redundant flight management system for PAH2 Tiger Attack Helicopter in VAX/XD-Ada for distributed 68020s.

    •  Creation of an Ada based meta language to describe the test specification/scenario/setup and results analysis for use with a dedicated test rig.

    •  Development and execution of formal qualification tests exploiting the previously developed meta-language..

    Vibrometer, Switzerland           Proj. Mgr./Architect           4/90 to 5/92

    A mission critical equipment for the A340/330 range of aircraft. The system had extensive interfaces with other aircraft systems.  The system, was developed using Ada and C to the highest Air Safety standards, RTCA-DO178A Level 1. Target was 68000/ST19841 DSP. The project was running a year behind schedule with the first scheduled delivery due to occur within 9 months of my start.

    •  Took over the technical management of software team. Use of rapid prototyping techniques allowed the delivery schedule to be recovered.

    •  Point of contact for the Customer; Aerospatiale. Recovery of client’s confidence in the team. Responsible to the Technical Director. Technical Co-ordination of 30 engineers distributed across several countries. Authority for all software related specifications and control of these with the customer/other equipment suppliers. Derivation of incremental development plan and generation of Work Breakdown structures and line item effort estimation using function point counting and COCOMO modelling techniques.  Progress tracking and calibration of the COCOMO model was also undertaken

    •  Created Factory Acceptance and System Test specifications from Airbus Reqs document. Created comprehensive cross referencing to demonstrate full test coverage. Assisted in creating/designing the necessary test environment/rig.

    •  Presentation to certification authorities for this Level 1 equipment..

    •  Support for the Boeing 777 EVMU bid. Performed a complete requirements engineering, analysis and software size/effort estimation using Coad/Yourdon.

    Hawker Siddeley, UK           Analyst/Developer           8/89 to 4/90

    Development of a high reliability secure communications system.

    •  Awarded fixed price contract for the systems requirements and analysis phases of the development. The problem domain consisted of approximately 65 classes discovered using Shlaer/Mellor OOA techniques.

    •  Petri net analysis/execution of the directed graph governing the protocol operation and recovery.

    Plessey Naval Systems, UK           Methods Consultant           5/89 to 8/89

    Selection of the techniques and methods to be used in the development of future Naval systems.

    •  Assessment of Object based techniques including Shlaer/Mellor OOA, Coad OORA and LSD.  Assessment of the suitability to convert an existing Yourdon RTSASD model into Shlaer/Mellor.

    •  Appraisal of differing lifecycle models and development process control with particular emphasis on rapid prototyping.

    GEC Avionics, UK           Principal Designer           5/88 to 4/89

    Active/Passive tracking of sonar targets utilising an array of 56000 based digital signal processors.

    •  Design of the Active Tracking subsystem, executing within a MASCOT environment; co-ordination of detailed design. Design was performed using Hatley/Pirbhai techniques  and the Teamwork CASE tool.

    •  Design and coding, using ASM56 and ASPECT56, of several major components within the subsystem.

    VSEL, UK           Developer           3/80 to 4/88

    Various large real time based projects.

    •  Led the hardware/software development of a complex distributed 8051 based solution to address the peculiarities of testing cables crossing the nuclear containment compartment of submarines.

    •  Development of multi-processor based systems to monitor the Nuclear propulsion plant for submarines. Developed in CORAL66/Mascot and later in Ada under AQAP13. Targets included PDP11/34, LSI11 & VAX11/750

    •  Development of 8086 based MIL-STD1553B bus monitor/analyser.

    •  Assisted in the introduction of structured methods, in particular Yourdon Ward/Mellor and Hatley/Pirbhai techniques.

    •  Reduction of a multi channel finite state machine from approx 50 MSI/LSI devices to a single PROM device based solution.
