PROJECTS:

 

2008-2010 – CleanSeaNet project

Operator in the CleanSeaNet service for the detection of oil pollution and analyst for SAR processor error monitoring.

CleanSeaNet is a European operational system for satellite detection of oil slicks for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).  The service started in May 2007 and provides analysed images from ENVISAT and RADARSAT satellites. A network of receiving stations in Norway, Italy and the Azores (the later as of 2008) receives the satellite data, which will then be relayed to control centres for rapid processing and analysis by trained operators. EDISOFT is part of the consortium that will provide the service to the participating coastal states and to EMSA.

 

2008-2011 – Urban Heat Island project

Development of algorithms for remote sensing multispectral data processing in Urban Heat Island project. Particularly, the developed algorithms work with satellite-based data (SEVIRI data, EPS data, AVHRR data, SRTM data and LST derived by MODIS/AVHRR/ AATSR) and ground-based data (ground station data), with the aim to produce parameters and indices (Air Temperature, thermal stress indices, Urban heat island maps, Risk maps) related to heat wave events. The integrated system works in Near Real Time, acquiring directly the ground station data by the official meteorological organizations. The main issue of the project is the global and continuative monitoring on the climatic changes introduced by the urban environment, that influences the life of the people. Satellite data of different characteristics and spatial resolution are used, with the aim to analyze the advantages and limitations of each system.

 Urban Heat Island and Urban Thermography - UHI - project is financed by ESA in the framework of the DUE - Data User Element - program. EDISOFT is part of the consortium.

 

2010-2011 – ERS-2 SAR processor

Development of a SAR processor of ERS-2 data for the generation of SLC and PRI images from raw data. The processor has to be installed in Santa Maria Station (Azores) and processes raw data to produce level 1 data. The processor is structured in the following steps:

1) metadata and interesting processing parameters extraction;

2) SAR data focusing, using Range Doppler algorithm. The algorithm retrieves the two Doppler parameters necessary for the processing starting from orbit state vector and estimating directly by raw data.

3) Calibration of data, including the antenna pattern compensation;

4) Georeferencing of data, starting from the orbit state vector.

 

2009-2013 – G-AOC project

Development of SAR interferometric techniques to model the urban roughness around the airports.

Envisat/ERS data set is used in SBAS (Small Baseline Subset) interferometric algorithm to produce high resolution DSM (Digital Surface Model) and change map of the area around the airports.

G-AOC is a project financed by ESA with ANA (Aeroportos de Portugal, SA).

The project addresses the safety issue related with the stated obstructions (its locations and heights) regarding aeronautical infrastructures in Airport Obstruction Charts (AOC), and Precision Approach Terrain Charts, integrating Earth Observation data with other sources. The objective is to implement a methodology to provide periodically accurate 3-D geographic information from EO data and other data.

 

2009-2013 – MARISS project

Development of a SAR vessel detector implemented in MATLAB for MARISS project. The software ingests ERS PRI images, Envisat products, Radarsat-1 and Radarsat-2 products, and provides information about ship position, ship size and ship velocity.

The MARitime Security Service project (MARISS) is a Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) Service Element (GSE) initiative, which responds to one of the consolidated needs of GSE: Maritime Security. The project, which is supported by the European Space Agency, is the result of European concern over the illegal marine trafficking.  Within the project, EDISOFT is responsible for providing to the Portuguese Users NRT SAR vessel detection and classification products by integrating Earth Observation EO (SAR) with non EO systems data like AIS, VTS, VMS and in the future LRIT.

 

2011-2013 – SeaU project

Improvement of oil spill detection through the integration of dedicated filtering techniques with the Support Vector Machine-based-classifier.

The oil service is a pan-European service, but a more cost-effective return on the investments in the GMES space component and the service element requires that the user bases increases. The project SeaU is based on the “Multisensor satellite technology for oil pollution monitoring and source identification”.

The project, which is supported by the European Commission, is the result of European concern over the marine pollution problem. The consortium is composed of the CSN service providers and R&D organisations with a high level of expertise within the area of remote sensing and marine surveillance.

SeaU project is funded under the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Commission.

 

2011-2014– SEABILLA project

Development of SAR processing algorithms for vessel detection that improve the actual state of the art, space data fusion for optimization of the information; intelligence scheme implementation through the development of behaviour modulus for the analysis of potential ship abnormal behaviour depending on global ship positions, environmental conditions and a priori information.

Development and implementation of SAR raw/SLC data simulator of the marine environment, to simulate the meteorological conditions on the sea surface and the presence of moving ships.

The SeaBILLA project is dedicated to Sea Border Surveillance of European sea, with the aim to monitor the drug traffic, the immigration traffic and terroristic actions. The project aims to 1) define the architecture for cost-effective European Sea Border Surveillance systems, integrating space, land, sea and air assets, including legacy systems; 2) apply advanced technological solutions to increase performances of surveillance functions; 3) develop and demonstrate significant improvements in detection, tracking, identification and automated behaviour analysis of all vessels, including hard to detect vessels, in open waters as well as close to coast. SeaBILLA is based on requirements for Sea Border Surveillance defined by experienced operational users.

SEABILLA project is funded under the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Commission.

 

2011-2014– Dolphin project

Development of advanced SAR processing algorithms for vessel detection and velocity estimation from single channel SAR data (raw and SLC) and post-processing techniques to produce operative tool for sea border surveillance.

Taking benefit from the previous and on-going efforts in the GMES context, the DOLPHIN project intends to develop the key technological and operational gap-filling innovations, leading in the mid-term to a full and sustainable operational exploitation of Earth Observation Satellites capabilities in the EU and MS maritime policies applications. DOLPHIN aims at developing new tools providing effective improvements of the state-of-the-art capabilities in Maritime Surveillance with respect to Users’ real needs in particular through filling their present technological gaps.

The identification of these technological gaps is made easier by the fact that the DOLPHIN partners have developed a solid experience through a number of past and on going initiatives, such as LIMES, MARISS, MarCoast, EMSA CSN, in which a wide European Users community in the Maritime Surveillance sector has already taken an active part in identifying application needs and technological gaps.

Dolphin project is funded under the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Commission.
