Professional Experience

United Space Alliance / Kennedy Space Center– Cape Canaveral, FL                     July 1995 – July 2011

Technical Operations Project Lead – External Tank Mechanical wJanuary 2006 – July 2011

Led timely processing of external tank from shipment via New Orleans to Kennedy Space Center through successful launch to return of vehicle. Documented daily processing activities, generated reports and presentations, and developed work procedures for technicians, inspectors, and customer inspectors. Interfaced with NASA and primary vendors, verified technical requirements, and maintained associated database. Scheduled test activities, delegated assignments, coordinated training, and evaluated staff performance.

Orchestrated four-/five-day imagery analysis entailing review with systems specialized engineering organization of 135+ ground camera locations and film consisting of infrared, photogrammetry, HD regular and high speed, long range telescopic camera system, and on orbit camera assets from shuttle and ISS crews.

Major Accomplishments:

  • Met NASA’s requirement to increase flight rate by up to two flights each year by bringing deferred vendor work from prime contractor Lockheed Martin in-house. Led on time, under budget completion of contract addendums, engineering changes, technician training, hazard reviews, and flight certification.
  • Optimized launch team’s decision-making process by enhancing photographic documentation and timeframe of imagery assessment to provide complete view of vehicle prior to “final go” and “re-entry” decisions. Tested software developed by customer counterparts and developed procedures for incorporation into launch sequence.
  • Recognized with Launch Directors Award and Program Excellence Award for saving program $1M+, while creating capability to perform electrical, mechanical, and thermal work in hostile, potentially explosive environment of launch pad area by modifying conex box that physically fit onto launch pad, passed safety review, and provided necessary thermal environment.
  • Delivered 18 space shuttle external tanks (ET) with numerous ET modifications on every flight, on time, and within budget.

Technical Operations Project Lead – Hypergol Propulsion Systems wAugust 1997 – January 2006

Processed orbital maneuvering system during routine maintenance and expedited repairs to support launch schedule. Maintained daily logs of processing activities. Served as primary point of contact with NASA and vendors. Scheduled test activities, verified technical requirements, and maintained database. Coordinated staff training, delegated assignments, and evaluated employee performance. Console test engineer hazardous propellants, hypergols. Scheduled facility maintenance and reviewed results.  Orbital tube welding techniques, high/low pressure GN2/GHe systems test/maintenance

Major Accomplishments:

  • Delivered hypergol hardware, four flight sets from heavy maintenance, and three flight pods for unplanned repairs on time, on budget, and with excellent performance on orbit.
  • Enhanced specialized repair turnover by improving vendor subcomponent maintenance and support via increase in daily meetings/teleconferences, cleaning, and documentation.
  • Reduced failures by at least 50%, improved on-orbit reliability, and limited costly repairs and processing timelines for orbital maneuvering system thrusters by incorporating and activating GN2 purge system at hypergolic maintenance facility (HMF) in all three test areas. GN2 purge system removed moisture (corrosive products) from thruster throat during processing.
  • Identified and repaired failure on main propellant line on time with broken spare part also repaired and returned to ready spares.
  • Creation of mandrels/lapping kit to repair minor imperfections of both vehicle/ground flanges for propellant and clean gas systems

Mechanical Technician – SRB (Solid Rocket Booster) Retrieval Operations wJuly 1995 – August 1997

Retrieved, disassembled, and returned flown solid rocket boosters to ATK Utah for refurbishment and reuse.

Major Accomplishment:

  • Completed training in ordnance safing, hypegol safing movement of large flight components and heavy ground support equipment, use of hydrolazing equipment to remove high strength thermal materials, maritime operations, use of hypobaric chambers, ship operations, and basic seamanship functions.
