Operations Engineer: 90 % of my duties consist of working at the User Support & Operations Center (USOC) , supporting European payloads on the International Space Station (ISS)

  • Operations Engineer, working in a 24/7 team supporting ISS payloads; European Technology Exposure Facility (EuTEF), ERB-2, FOCUS, KID and the European Drawer Rack (EDR).
  • Experiment Activity Manager for the Miller-Urey Payload; Lead Coordinator for Operational Products of the payload ranging from procedure development (PODFs) to End-to-End testing (Experiment Sequence Testing). Direct Interface and P.O.C. to NASA Payload Operation & Integration Centre (POIC).
  • Work Packet Manager Training Coordination: Training Coordinator for new Operators at the USOC; Responsible for setting up courses and training for new Operators, setting up new training/simulation scenarios, support to coordinating new simulations between the different European USOCs and European Astronaut Center (EAC), developing training methodology for new payloads. Organizing Internal Knowledge Transfer. Support to EAC in Astronaut training.
  • Work Packet Manager Hardware & Configuration Control: Responsible for all Hardware related issues and Configuration Control at the USOC
  • Support to different types of acceptance/validation tests on several Payload Engineering Models (EuTEF, PCDF, FOCUS, ERB-2 and EDR)
  • Support to management of the Erasmus USOC Clean Room and USOC Infrastructural issues

 

R&D Engineer: Worked on several smaller assignments on other projects

  • APLA project: Requirements development of a future Astronaut electronic trainer aid system.
  • Documentation of Cone-Express CX2 requirements
  • Galileo Monitoring and Uplink Control Facility (MUCF) documentation
  • Support to programming of European Technology Exposure Facility (EuTEF) Simulator Models
  • X-ROB project: STK mission analysis for robotic missions to the Moon and Mars

Position: Internship, Worked on the Functional Model Hardware & Software testing of the Qualification Model of the Planck Scientific Satellite. During the internship I developed a tool using MATLAB to process and analyze the telemetry data from the Planck model and the space simulator. Besides this I also worked on other smaller assignments as estimating pointing accuracies of the satellite’s sensors.

Position: Member of Design Synthesis Group (as student). Worked on the preliminary design of a fly-by-wire control system for the Euro/Enaer Eaglet

 

Master Thesis

For my Master’s thesis project I worked on a design of High Thrust - Solar Thermal Propulsion unit for a Mars mission. This project was proposed by me and two other colleges; it was approved by our supervising professors.

The main focus was the research and design of a cryogenic propellant storage and feeding system, thermal energy storage and a collector and optical transport system for solar energy. During the course of this project I learned to apply and combine most of my knowledge on a wide range of fields.

 

Practical Experience 

  • Flight Tests: I have done several flight dynamics test practical in a Cessna Citation II, in which I learned to apply flight dynamics/performance techniques in an actual flight test using MATLAB/Simulink.
