SUMMARY

Graduating with a first class master’s degree in Physics and the Universe in 2006 I began a 2 year graduate scheme at EADS Astrium Satellites as a radiation and nuclear hardening engineer. On completion I continued to work in this role, becoming a senior engineer. I moved to Surrey Satellites as a Senior Space Environment Engineer in 2010. I am currently applying for CPhys status and I am a member of the Institute of Physics. I am an extremely knowledgeable and experienced physicist and an expert in the fields of radiation and thermal analysis/modelling. I hold NATO level military clearance.

Senior Space Environment Engineer - November 2010 to Present

  • Radiation and thermal protection of satellites and spacecraft
  • Extensive EEE parts knowledge - commercial and space qualified
  • Complex analysis and reviews for critical large scale European Space Agency missions (such as Galileo - European Navigation Network) with responsibility for budget, quality and schedule
  • Regularly lead highly technical customer and sub-contractor meetings throughout Europe
  • Detailed thermodynamic analysis using Thermica, ESATAN, Sinda-G, Fastrad, SPENVIS and OMERE (mixture of code based and CAD based software). Highly adaptable to new software
  • Devising thermal control sub-systems to ensure the thermal stability of materials, components, optics and modules on spacecraft are met throughout mission lifetimes
  • Supporting thermal tests and developing test equipment
  • Carrying out radiation tests using Cobalt60, Heavy Ion and Proton sources

Radiation and Nuclear Hardening Engineer - October 2007 to November 2010

  • Ensuring all electrical components and materials used within satellite equipments and payloads were protected against the radiation environment of space, such as total ionising dose, displacement damage, single event effects and electrostatic discharge
  • Creation of detailed 3D models and environmental simulations used to carry out ray-tracing, Monte Carlo and reverse Monte Carlo simulations
  • Preparation of detailed and comprehensive reports to summarise analysis results and conclusions
  • Detailed knowledge of the physical mechanisms of radiation effects
  • Critical reviews of supplier analyses and documentation
  • Meeting with suppliers and sub-contractors (located throughout Europe and the USA) to audit their internal processes and check confidential radiation test data
  • Presentations to summarise the radiation profile of satellites to both internal and external customers
