Engineering Experience

THESIS: Space Environment Effects Measurement and Spectral Analysis (2011-2012)

Cal Poly Master’s Thesis:

·         Contributed to the production of a space environments testing system for analysis of orbital objects and debris materials.

·         Produced and improved a methodology for measuring the spectral effects of some space environments on spacecraft materials.

·         Measured the spectral effects of some space environments on a sample set of spacecraft materials.

·         Created a MATLAB script using numerical analysis and signal processing methods to identify individual material spectra from a combined spectrum.

TEAM LEAD: Solar Collector (2009-2010)

Cal Poly Senior Project:

·         Assisted as part of a team which designed and constructed a trough-type solar collector, with the goal of building a cost-effective solar cooking device for the developing world.

·         Lead the team in the second year of the project, analyzing and constructing a dish-type solar collector, for similar goals, with added focus on possible power generation applications.

·         The paper produced from this analysis, design, and construction is still used in continuing research by the team.

TEAM LEAD: Systems Engineering (2011-2012)

Cal Poly Class Projects:

·         Lead a series of class projects on systems engineering, applying systems engineering methods to various case studies and design problems.

·         Applied principles included (partial list):

o    Produced formal requirements documents

o    Developed testing, verification, and validation methods for requirements

o    Performed simple trade studies

o    Applied methods of functional decomposition and work breakdown structures, among others.

ANALYSIS PROJECT: Langmuire Data Analysis (2012)

Cal Poly Class Project:

·         Coded a MATLAB script to automatically calculate the plasma parameters from data measured with a Langmuire Probe with minimal user input to the script.

ANALYSIS PROJECT: Orbital Analysis (2011)

Cal Poly Graduate Class Project:

·         Developed a MATLAB script which provided preliminary orbital analysis for a mission to Vesta. 

·         Modeled several possible trajectories:

o    Elliptical transfer

o    Plane change

o    Low-thrust

·         Modeled several of these with additional work on gravity assists beyond the scope of the project. 

ANALYSIS PROJECT: Control Systems (2011)

Cal Poly Graduate Class Project:

·         Designed and coded a control system for formation flight in a constellation of spacecraft using a feedback control system.

·         Contributed in the construction a system model in MATLAB and Simulink modeling a dynamic control system for a spacecraft in 3-axis stabilization and orbit control in a halo orbit in a libration point.
