Visiting researcher – Crew Medical Support Office, European Space Agency (ESA) - European Astronaut Centre (EAC), Cologne (Germany)

·         A review of space technology transfer for terrestrial healthcare benefit to outline strong, factual examples of effective and beneficial technology transfer from space to terrestrial biomedical and life science sectors, supporting EAC Medical Projects & Technology Staff in liaising with ESA Life Sciences Division to coordinate health related projects. All this with the aim toidentify how to define a good space spin-off, and to analyse how to best spin off space technologies, considering the cost/benefit ratio, management, marketing and business implications as well as the legal and ethical issues to improve the spin-off process in the future.

·         Concept for a novel space radiation shielding system to propose a scientific and technological research project in the human spaceflight radiation protection field, with the aim to develop a novel spacecraft, space suit and planetary living modules shielding system against space radiation, using new biomaterials also able to provide life support systems.

Attend team meetings and teleconferences covering: ESA human spaceflight new technology and policy reports, Concordia Antarctica research base monitoring and report, 16th NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) report, budget, etc.

Development of recombinant idiotypic vaccines for “subset-specific” immunotherapy of HIV-related B-cell lymphoproliferations to develop therapeutic vaccines targeting B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) idiotype allowing the treatment and the better clinical control of a relatively broad spectrum of B cell lymphoproliferations, also including a proportion of HIV related NHLs, with a lower toxicity than conventional therapies.
