Main activities and responsibilities

The objective of the activity is to model the liquid propulsion system of the fourth stage of  VEGA, (pressurization system, liquid and gaseous tanks, hydraulic lines, valves, pressure regulator, engine, etc.) in order to predict performance and line losses of the system.

Modelling of components of such bi-propellants system is made by means of the EcosimPro (ESPSS library).

Course description

The Course is organized in two phases:

the first devoted to lectures delivered by professors and specialists from the sponsoring entities (main topics: launcher system architecture and design, space program and cost management, propulsion system, mission analysis, ground segment);

the second phase is devoted to the making of a Master Thesis project conducted during a Stage of six months spent at one of the sponsoring entities.

The Master provides also a training period in different European laboratories and agencies such as CIRA, Von Karman Institute, DLR, Onera.

Thesis Title

Analysis of Combustion Instability in a Liquid Rocket Combustor

 

The dissertation was carried out at Purdue University (Indiana, USA) and lasted a period of four months. Combustion instability problem in a model rocket combustor has been investigated both experimentally and analytically. Tests have been performed at Maurice Zucrow Laboratory at Purdue University and data collected have been analyzed and considered in order to improve the predictive capability of a matlab code for combustion instability prediction.
