Satellite Controller Specialist

September 2008 – Present

  • Currently maintains a secret clearance.
  • Completed the Naval Satellite Operations Center (NAVSOC) review board for Satellite Controller certification.
  • Responsible for understanding all Space/Ground links, Ground Station equipment, Data transport systems, and ground software. Identifies problems, and determines the best applicable course of action for troubleshooting affected systems.
  • Performs real time commanding, telemetry monitoring, and console operations for NAVSOC, for the UHF Follow-On (UFO), Fleet Satellite (FLTSAT), and Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) geosynchronous satellite constellations.
  • Performed real time commanding, telemetry monitoring, and ground resource allocation for the GEOSAT Follow-On (GFO) and Navy Ionosphere Monitoring Satellite (NIMS) low-Earth orbiting satellites, prior to their decommissioning.
  • Reacts to spacecraft anomalies, and telemetry limit violations. Notifies engineering department staff of spacecraft status changes. Notifies external agencies when anomalous conditions affect the customer.
  • Executes real-time operations and scheduling processes for satellite contacts. These include de-confliction, 24 hour contact scheduling, 10 hour scheduling, support site or time changes made within the contact phase of operations.
  • Interfaces with Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) network schedulers on a daily basis. Ensures that all requested satellite supports are properly scheduled and modified as required.
  • Provides support through troubleshooting local and remote ground systems issues. Identifies remote site hardware malfunctions via software processes. Recalls remote site personnel to restore service when required.
  • Assembles daily performance assessment reports, and presents results at daily operations briefings.
  • Performs weekly cryptographic updates, and cryptographic loads using various fill devices.
  • Performs as the lead Mission Planner for NAVSOC. Plans all satellite contacts in accordance with Support Requirements Documents, and engineering requests. Assigns all contacts to specific NAVSOC and AFSCN ground system resources. Distributes the completed schedule to Network Schedulers, and NAVSOC personnel. This has resulted in no missed satellite contacts during the planning phase of operations.
  • Schedules routine and emergency downtimes for ground segment equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Processes special requests for satellite vehicle commanding and monitoring by customers.
  • Creates standard operating procedures, checklist procedures, and implements training for future NAVSOC Satellite Controllers and Mission Planners, resulting in standardized training and operating procedures for my organization.
  • Supports ground system software and hardware upgrades by participating in testing and evaluation procedures. Works with engineering personnel to develop test plans, and coordinate scheduled system outages to support testing and validation of equipment.
  • Conducts training and certification of new Satellite Operations employees.
  • Conducted scheduling functions for launch and early orbit operations on the new Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite.

  • Monitored and recorded transmit power levels, modem receive levels, user data and timing, and overall terminal statuses on hourly intervals.
  • Assisted in troubleshooting of remote satellite communications links in tactical networks, resulting in minimized communication outages.
  • Joint Service Achievement Medal: Recognized October 2003 for providing communications successfully in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
  • Army Achievement Medal: Awarded November 2005 for providing communications successfully in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  • Performed troubleshooting and fault isolation techniques on SATCOM terminals, successfully diagnosing component malfunctions and minimizing communication outages.
