Thesis: Cost Effective Antenna Design for Small Satellite Pulsed and LFMCW RaDAR

  • Investigated antenna cost factors for both pulsed and Linear Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (LFMCW) satellite RaDAR to monitor tropical deforestation 
  • Used mutual coupling to decrease the multimode horn element’s height and effective volume in the phased array
  • Skills acquired:
    1. Mission analysis to see how the objective and sub-systems affect each other and the antenna design
    2. Wrote mode matching simulator in C programming language
    3. Numerical simulator HFSS
    4. Antenna design using analytical model and verification through numerical simulators
    5. Mentored another Ph.D. student in aerodynamics with simulators’ experience and mission analysis design.
