Title: Investigation on Specific Microstrip Filters with Defected Ground
Structure

Brief Description: Filter is the very essential component of communication system
with compact size to the conventional counterpart. In the new era of Wireless
communication, the filter should be compact, low profile with sharp transitions. So
the design parameters should be chosen in such a manner that the overall
performance such as VSWR, impedance bandwidth, return loss, insertion loss,
suppressed harmonics etc. given by the filter should be better. For this
purpose, I am working on the filter size reduction techniques, multiband design
techniques, bandwidth enhancement techniques, etc. The artificial neural network
(ANN) is being used for the analysis of microstrip filters, Wave iterative method is
being used for analysis of Microstrip. In addition the one dimensional photonic
band gap structures called defected ground structure (DGS) is also used and
incorporated in the microstrip filters for the further improvement of filters
properties such as size reduction, Bandwidth enhancement, sharp transitions,
higher order mode suppression.
Design study of some specific microstrip filters like low pass, high pass,
band-pass, band-stop, CSRR filters, and tunable filters along with the defected
ground structure has been carried out as the research work. As the DGS has also
been used in the design of antennas; Multiband antennas with different
topologies and not much work has been reported by the researchers in this
regard. Therefore it becomes necessary to see the effect of the DGS in
specific filters and to study their performances. The simulation process is
done by the CST microwave studio, ADS, and Ansoft HFSS. Measurement
and fabrication is also being carried out. Further the study on numerical
techniques such as FDTD, MOM, and FEM etc have also been carried out.
In addition some mini projects are completed:
1. Design of a filter calculator using MATLAB.
2. Design of Microstrip Bandpass filter at for WiMax applications.
3. Design of Microstrip seven pole low pass filter for WLAN applications.
4. Design of Equal-split Wilkinson power divider.
5. Design of a 50 ohm line branch line coupler.
6. Design of a 20dB single-section backward coupling microstrip line.

Title: Design of microstrip seven pole low pass filter with defected ground
structure
Supervisor: Dr.R.Gowri
Brief Description: A Problem related on the design of a seven pole low
pass filter for sharp transitions with size reduction to conventional type
filter with hexagonal metal shaped DGS and comparison of the various
topologies of DGS for wireless applications such as WLAN, WiMAX and Wi-
Fi. 2. Design various type of DGS shape using only the
50 ohm line and the DGS slot is etched in the ground plane of the
Microstrip line and study of their characteristics the results of this proposed
hexa-metal shaped DGS shows the very sharp transition comparison to the
convention seven pole Microstrip filter with large bandwidth and high power
handling capacity and all the simulations are carried out using Ansoft HFSS
V10. The important factor to use the DGS structure is to reduce the size of
filter up-to 70 percent.
