Visiting scientist – Internship period

Main activities and responsibilities

Assessment of co-channel interference on the next generation of radio-occultation instruments.

Problem studying:

GNSS theory background: signal transmitted (modulation schemes, frequency bands);

Orbital mechanics: reference coordinate systems, fundamentals of satellite orbits;

Radio Occultation technique: occultation geometry, level 1a processing algorithms (signal phase), level 1b processing algorithms (bending angle retrieving), overview of the retrieving phases of the main level 2 products.

Orbital simulations (by STK software) of the scenario encountered by the instrument. Data processing of simulations results (using Matlab tool) for the time-varying geometry analysis.

Analysis of atmospheric profiles: analysis of four categories of bending angle profiles, as function of the impact parameter and tangent height.

Evaluation of the power of all signals: all signals received inside and outside the field-of-view of the instrument were considered for the successive interference evaluation.

Evaluation of the interference level and relative noise degradation.

Evaluation of the interference impact on the measurement performance.

Elaboration of a final report and of a final presentation (in English) in front of a group of specialists of the field.
