‘Dendritic Receptors on Self-Assembled Surfaces for Metal Ion Uptake’

Developing new surface receptors on a sensor for detection of heavy metal ions using piezoelectric transduction. Dendritic polymers were implemented as sensor functionalities on the gold sensor electrode surface. Surface analysis methods such as XPS and AFM were used during the research.

Dec 2008 – Mar 2011 Postdoctoral researcher in Soft Condensed Matter group, Universiteit Utrecht,; ‘FOM programme: Plasmonics: Nonlinear plasmonics’

Project 1 involved studying and imaging silver nanoparticles in particular silver nanooctohedrons using electron microscopies and optical microscopies. The silver nanoparticles were observed to develop nanoparticulates on the surface as it aged. The roughened silver surfaces were then used for Raman spectroscopic work. For this project I needed to seek out support and expertise of others outside my own group to solve the relevant research problems.

Project 2 involved creating gold nanorod arrays using e-beam lithographic methods and inducing melting of the nanoparticles using a fast fs – laser. Clean room facilities were used for fabrication. The optical properties before and after were observed. A home-built optical setup was implemented for this study and knowing how to align the laser light was integral part.

Feb 2007 – Aug 2008 Institute for Nanoscale Physics and Chemistry (INPAC), Centre of Excellence Postdoctoral Fellow, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, , ‘Wide field fluorescence microscopy to study the optical properties of silver nanowires and STM of organic molecular template.’

Silver nanowires were exposed to wide field laser light. A laser light was directed through a setup into a microscope where the sample was placed. Bright scattering spots were observed along the wire. Operating and aligning the laser to the right position important for this role.
