Dates

From 16th July 2009

Occupation or position held

Senior Technical Specialist

Main activities and responsibilities

Worked/working on the following projects:

·         Project pkt306 GMES INITIAL OPERATIONS (GIO) LAND MONITORING

It aims at providing geospatial products for supporting users of the GMES Security domain in managing situations of complex crises caused by man-made or natural disasters. Such support to the crisis management ranges from pre-crisis or prevention (contingency plans, reference mapping), to the phase soon after the event (event mapping, crisis area mapping, critical assets), and finally to the post event phase (damage assessment and monitoring mode) in general. Geospatial products are pre-operationally generated in either rush, non-rush or monitoring mode.

Role: Production manager and technical support.

·         Project pkt302 GMES INITIAL OPERATIONS (GIO) LAND MONITORING

The aim of the project is the production of five high resolution layers of land cover (imperviousness, forests, grasslands, wetlands and water bodies).

Role: Images pre-processing, Imperviousness and Forests layers production for Mediterranean Countries.

·         Project pkt291 BIOSOS

Biodiversity Multi-SOurce Monitoring System. The purpose of the project that aims to develop tools and models for consistent multi-annual monitoring of NATURA 2000 sites and their surroundings.

Role: Remote sensing data analysis and correction.

·         Project pkt222 GEOLAND

The project aims to organise a qualified production network, to build, validate and demonstrate operational processing lines and to set-up a user driven product quality assurance process in the framework of GMES Land Service program.

Role: Remote sensing data analysis and correction, training material development and training execution.

·         Project pkt268 GMES GMOSAIC

The aim of the project is to develops pre-operational services across five main areas of benefits: nuclear non-proliferation, migration and borders, crisis management, natural resources and critical assets.

Role: Remote sensing for mapping critical areas.

·         Project pkt275 GMES FTS Soil Sealing Enhancement

The purpose of the project is the enhancement of a high-resolution land-cover map for built-up areas, including degree of soil sealing, for 38 countries in Europe

Role: Editing of the dataand verification of the quality of the output.

·         Project pkt258 Urban Heat Islands

The project is aimed to integrate satellite remote sensing and ground data into urban meteorological and climate models, to facilitate preventing the impact of urban heat islands and to reduce the risk of a heat wave.

Role: Implementation of data processing chain.

Dates

From 15th July 2003 to 15th July 2009

Occupation or position held

Research assistant

Main activities and responsibilities

The research activity was focused on the use of VIS/NIR satellite data on the retrieval of the water quality parameters of the oceans and seas. The two main topics of the research were:

·         Investigation on the combined use of Synthetic Aperture Radar and VIS/NIR imagery under sunglint condition for the oil spill detection and tracking. In particular, MODIS and MERIS images, which have a high repetitive coverage, acquired in sunglint conditions are able to reveal smoothed regions such as those affected by oil pollution.

  • Retrieval of water quality parameters using VIS/NIR sensor. The aim of the research was the validation and development of the algorithms (empirical or analytical) for the retrieval of water quality parameters in the coastal marine area (chloropyll concentration, total suspend material ecc). From 2006 to 2008 the research activity was included in the IMCA project framework, and it was focused on the setup and realization of in situ measurements of radiometric and bio-physics parameters in the three sites of IMCA projects, and the following analysis of these data in conjunction with satellite data.
