INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

April 2007 – Principal Spacecraft Propulsion Engineer – EADS Astrium, UK

My work involves all areas related to Bi-propellant, Mono-propellant, Dual mode & Plasma Propulsion System (PPS)design and architecture of spacecraft chemical propulsion systems (CPS). My role covers all phases of propulsion system design and development from initial design concepts to final CPS AIV testing and in orbit operation. My theoretical knowledge and industrial experience working as a spacecraft Telecommunications, Earth observation, Navigation & Science (ENS) CPS engineer has instilled me a comprehensive range of technical expertise, skills and knowledge, some of which are listed below;

►  Senior / Chief CPS design engineer and architect for telecommunication, Earth observation, Navigation and Science (ENS) missions. Current and past missions include GAIA CPS & MPS, METOP B & METOPC, AEOLUS, Amazonas 2, Arabsat 5C, Yahsat 1B, Express AM7 &                             Arabsat 6B.

⇒   Propulsion system design and flight analysis refinement to meet mission specific requirements

⇒   Supplier and component selection to meet system objectives

⇒   Equipment qualification and flight worthy acceptance testing at subsystem level

⇒   Sub-system to system level assembly, integration & verification testing

⇒   Spacecraft environmental (EV), post-EV & launch site test and verification for flight

⇒   Launch preparation (spacecraft fuelling PT calibration) and operations (system monitoring – S/C TM)

⇒   In-orbit system monitoring (Venting, priming, pressurisation) and CPS flight performance analysis

⇒   CPS status verification and conformance to operational requirements prior to spacecraft handover

►  Appointed to the role of Astrium UK, CPS design / AIV interface manager

⇒   Interfacing between CPS design and AIV activities across all ENS and several telecommunication spacecraft providing technical expertise and consultancy to the preparation of technical directives, design instruction sheets, test specifications and plans to resolve CPS non-conformances

⇒   This appointment involved spacecraft at acceptance and post-delivery test phases.

►  Astrium UK, CPS equipment technical expert and product owner

⇒   In charge of all supplier level (Astrium GmbH, AMPAC-ISP, Ametek, Bradford, Vacco) fill and drain valves, vent valves, test ports and Pressure transducers for all telecoms and ENS missions.

⇒   Owner of component design evolution, research and technical development (R&D) activities, qualification needs, functional requirements specifications, SOW and test plans.

►  CPS technical lead for E3K mark-III phase A/B technical R&D

⇒   Development initiative for new generation, low cost, low mass, reduced size E3000+ satellite for the lower payload power telecommunication market.

⇒   Performing and assessing system component, materials and processes in a trade-off study matrix implementing the latest state of-the art concepts and technologies. Utilising an optimum design solution I created initial design, manufacturing & test documentation, SOW, schedules, costs and mass budgets for the primary phase development.

Launcher propulsion engineer for CNES, at the Guiana space centre

►  Launcher performance modelling and computer simulations (EFFECTS) development

⇒   In charge of developing motor performance models and work plans based on these models of the Ariane 5 main cryogenic stage (Vulcain motor) and SRB’s to ascertain the effects that the combustion products of the exhaust plumb would have on the atmosphere and the dangers involved to humans if a failure occurs in the area of the launch site.

►  Technical analyst and customer adviser at the Guyana space centre

⇒   Debris impact analysis on people and buildings from stored propellant / pressurant tank explosions

⇒   Accidental release of hazardous substances including gas vaporisation and dispersion rates from spacecraft fuel leaks in the satellite S2 and S5 cleanrooms and loading hall.
