Profile

 

A highly capable, versatile and experienced spacecraft engineer with over twenty five years experience in the satellite industry. Proven track record in system level functional verification, validation, AOCS design, development, testing and operations on a number of the European Space Agency’s most successful programmes (i.e. SOHO, XMM_Newton, Integral and GAIA). Moreover, technical ability and excellence are augmented with a degree in law that was obtained whilst working full time. These services have been provided through my own company since 1997.

Ø  Engineering of bespoke complex satellite avionics systems from inception to delivery.

Ø  Leadership of multi-disciplined engineering teams.

Ø  Running and coordination of functional verification and validation test campaigns on both the test bench and spacecraft including:

·       Leading a team of test engineers.

·       Functional test requirement specification, checking and signing off on test procedures, activity control sheets, and preparation of test analysis reports.

·       Resolution of Non Conformance Reports (NCRs).

Ø  Procurement of hardware (e.g. star tracker, fine sun sensor, reaction wheels, and gyroscopes) and flight software, including specification of requirements and subcontract management.

Ø  Requirements capture, both at system and subsystem level.

Ø  Authoring of test requirements specifications for hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing and assessment of test results.

Ø  Resolution of in-flight emergencies, e.g. recovery of the SOHO spacecraft.

Ø  Preparation of bids.

Ø  Interfacing with the prime customer from the ITT stage through to delivery.

Ø  Design and development of failure, detection, isolation and recovery (FDIR) strategies.

Ø  Preparation of flight operations procedures.

Ø  Detailed design and performance analysis of closed loop attitude control systems.

Ø  Simulation development using Matlab and Simulink.

Career History

 

1997-Present: Telcrest Systems Limited (Self Employed)

 

1999 – Present; Client: Airbus Defence and Space (Stevenage) (formerly EADS Astrium Ltd)

Ø  Functional lead responsible for the AOCS, flight operations, database and functional verification and validation on Aeolus.

Ø  Subcontract manager on ESA’s GAIA spacecraft for the fine sun sensor and star tracker. Also responsible for the specification of detailed requirements for hardware-in-the-loop testing and analysis of results from these tests. Moreover, general support at the architectural level for other AOCS activities on GAIA.

Ø  AOCS subsystem and operations engineer on ESA’s Aeolus spacecraft with direct responsibility for:

·       flow down of requirements from system (i.e. prime level) down to subsystem and unit level;

·       flight software user requirements;

·       selection, as part of a panel, of unit suppliers;

·       procurement of the star tracker and inertial measurement unit;

·       FDIR design and analysis (both fail safe and fail operational);

·       AOCS flight operations procedures and other inputs to the Flight Operations Manual.

Ø  Led the bid to win the Aeolus AOCS subsystem, which depended on a thorough analysis and understanding of the customer’s (i.e. ESA’s) requirements.

Ø  Led study to develop hybrid AOCS system on a chip (UniNav)

Ø  Analysis and reporting of the performance of ESA’s Integral spacecraft’s safe mode closed loop control

1998 -1999; Client: MMS (UK) Ltd (Bristol)

Ø  Member of the team that retrieved ESA’s SOHO spacecraft to full operation after it was rendered inoperable by operator error. Of necessity the work had to be done under pressure, and yet be detailed, accurate and be assured of success.

Ø  Design and analysis of the attitude control loops used in the emergency mode of ESA’s gamma ray observatory, Integral.

1997: Client: Laben Spa

Ø  Participated in bid and won a contract to develop a 3-axis rate measurement unit.

Ø  Researched and established requirements for the ‘Integrated Spacecraft Avionics Package’ that combined data handling, power distribution and AOCS into one single unit.

 

1996-1997 Logica UK Ltd

Consultant. Requirements capture and specification for a RF and data acquisition system.

 

1990-1996 Matra Marconi Space (UK) Limited (Bristol)

Ø  Senior GNC Engineer. Designed and developed the high accuracy pointing mode for ESA’s X-ray observatory, XMM. Also wrote the requirement specification for the reaction wheel unit; helped to select unit supplier; procured the reaction wheel unit; performed detailed simulation work and flowed down software requirements.

Ø  Designed and analysed the high accuracy pointing mode for ESA’s SOHO spacecraft. Also a member of the team that performed the ‘hardware in the loop’ test campaign of the SOHO AOCS.

 

1987 – 1990 Vega Space Systems Limited

Systems engineer. Mathematical modelling and development of AOCS simulators.

 

1985-1987 Southampton University (Aeronautics & Astronautics Dept)

Research assistant. Conducted research into increasing levels of spacecraft on-board autonomy.
