Relevant Work Experience

Team Lead, DLR, Cologne (Germany) — 01/2009-present

• Managed operations of the Materials Science Laboratory (MSL) as team lead at the Microgravity User Support Center (MUSC) at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, Germany. MSL is a $50 million (USD) materials science research facility onboard  the International Space Station. 
• Oversaw the successful processing of 30 materials science samples in close collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, and investigators from around the world. 
• Served as the principal MSL operations interface with NASA - Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL.
• Served as the principal operations interface with the Principal Investigators, to achieve maximum scientific return.
• Managed all MSL ground systems and initiated, planned, and executed a $50,000+ (USD) overhaul of the computer infrastructure to virtualize the console hardware, utilizing VMware software.
• Successfully developed several software programs in LabVIEW to improve and simplify the work environment at MUSC. Some were used in the operations world to display information on computer consoles, others were written for the science teams to improve the data handling of their experiments.
• Supported CIRCE (Cooperative International space station Research data Conservation and Exploitation) as one of two DLR contributors. CIRCE is part of the seventh Framework Program of the European Commission.

Intern, ESA, Noordwijk (The Netherlands) — 05/2008-12/2008

• Completed research for and published thesis for Electrical Engineering degree at ESA’s European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC).
• Developed a high precision accelerometer data acquisition system used at the ESTEC test center.
• Designed a dedicated Printed Circuit Board for the low noise accelerometer.
• Authored the code for the Xilinx FPGA in VHDL and utilized LabVIEW for the user interface and data flow.

Intern and Contractor, Delta Utec SRC, Leiden (The Netherlands) — 07/2006-04/2007

• Served as Harnessing Systems Engineer on the second Young Engineers’ Satellite (YES2).
• Managed the design, manufacturing, and assembly of the electrical harness of the YES2 satellite. 
• Supported the development of the YES2 project’s System Engineering database tool ALBATRos.
