Apex Composites Inc
02/2014 - 06/2014
Project lead in the development of various composite products. Design and optimisation of aerospace structures was mainly conducted in Solid Works and Catia. Development of a production line for automated VRTM for weight, process cycle and labour reduction, while guaranteeing the fibre volume fraction of the products. Conducting material impact studies for titanium- composite stacks for aerospace client programmes. Prototyping, production specifications and process optimisation, which included investigating in-line quality assurance techniques.
Research Engineer

Institute of Space Systems, University of Stuttgart
06 - 09/2013
Deployment support engineering of the FIFI-LS spectrometer for the NASA/DLR SOFIA Observatory. Finalising the instrument interface design, including positioning and integration of control components, harness management and production to MIL standards, PCB testing and diagnostics.
Master’s Thesis
Brisbane, QLD, Australia
University of Queensland, University of Southern Queensland
09/2012 - 04/2013
Investigation of the ablative and thermal heat shield performance of the Hayabusa re-entry capsule based on the raw data captured by the AUS instrument during NASA’s observation mission in 2010. Processing and analysing the spacial UV data in Matlab, and modeling with plasma radiation simulations conducted in ESA’s PARADE. Design of a shock-tunnel campaign for composite heat-shield material tests. Developing a preheating technique to create representative high re-entry surface temperatures. Applied fast-response optical measurement systems in NUV, VIS and NIR with ray path analysis in OSLO, and developed control and data acquisition tools in Labview for the experiments in vacuum facilities.
Research Thesis
Stuttgart, Germany
Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics, German Aerospace Center (DLR)
01 - 06/2012
Analysis of the FinEx flight experiment on the HIFiRE-5 hypersonic research mission. DLR developed this heat transfer experiment which was to analyse and evaluate for post processing of gathered flight data. Designed tunnel mounting and cooling components and performed tests in Plasma Wind Tunnels with a backup fin, including thermal system characterisation techniques with cw-laser/thermocouple response and pyrometry. Improved inverse heat transfer algorithms in Matlab for thermal 3D problems based on system identification, control theories and image reconstruction models. Evaluated the actual data of FinEx from the HIFiRE-5 flight with the developed Matlab software and derived in-flight temperature and heat flux profiles for the material experiment.
R&D Engineering Intern
Palmdale, CA, USA
NASA DAOF, Deutsches SOFIA Institut
10/2009 - 03/2010, 08/2011
Projects with departments of DLR and NASA. Starting with FEA studies and structural design optimisation in ANSYS and SolidWorks for the performance and handling improvement of the telescope. Later design and build of electronic error detection devices for the control system maintenance. Key experience was the participation in the envelope expansion flight campaign of SOFIA in the means of todays Armstrong Flight Research Center. The mission control room work involved the analysis of the thermal performance and other parameters of telescope and chamber.
