Investigation of the ablative and thermal heat shield performance of the Hayabusa re-entry capsule based on the raw data captured by the AUS instrument during NASA’s observation mission in 2010. Processing and analysing the spacial UV data in Matlab, and modeling with plasma radiation simulations conducted in ESA’s PARADE. Design of a shock-tunnel campaign for composite heat-shield material tests. Developing a preheating technique to create representative high re-entry surface temperatures. Applied fast-response optical measurement systems in NUV, VIS and NIR with ray path analysis in OSLO, and developed control and data acquisition tools in Labview for the experiments in vacuum facilities.

Analysis of the FinEx ﬂight experiment on the HIFiRE-5 hypersonic research mission. DLR developed this heat transfer experiment which was to analyse and evaluate for post processing of gathered ﬂight data. Designed tunnel mounting and cooling components and performed tests in Plasma Wind Tunnels with a backup ﬁn, including thermal system characterisation techniques with cw-laser/thermocouple response and pyrometry. Improved inverse heat transfer algorithms in Matlab for thermal 3D problems based on system identiﬁcation, control theories and image reconstruction models. Evaluated the actual data of FinEx from the HIFiRE-5 ﬂight with the developed Matlab software and derived in-ﬂight temperature and heat ﬂux proﬁles for the material experiment.

Key experience was the participation in the envelope expansion ﬂight campaign of SOFIA in the means of todays Armstrong Flight Research Center. The mission control room work involved the analysis of the thermal performance and other parameters of telescope and chamber.
