EV3 Audio Systems Engineering Intern September –December 2020
Primary task: worked on audio denoising communications between space stations, extravehicular missions, and ground control. Identified the best technologies for the project. Created techniques to reduce significant reverb and machine audio interference. Integrated these recurrent neural networks into a Raspberry Pi (microcomputer) to denoise communications and transcribe speech in real-time. Implemented an in-house solution based on this research. This required adept usage of python and TensorFlow, as well as an understanding of the methods of audio background noise suppression.
Secondary task: Built a simulator of space-to-ground speech implementation using G.729 audio standard. I built a raspberry pi, which utilized the G.729 data compression software to efficiently take in analog recorded speech, transfer it to digital format, transmit it to a remote computer, and then decompress it. This required me to build the raspberry pi from its component pieces as well as code and troubleshoot in Linux using C/C++.
