Master Degree Thesis, which is “Space-qualified design and validation of a fault-tolerant RISC microcontroller core in FPGA “with a degree mark of 110/110 cum laude (Prof. Mauro Olivieri, DIET, Univ. Sapienza of Rome).

 

The master degree thesis was focused on the design, implementation, verification and validation of a fault-tolerant VHDL Microcontroller Unit soft-core, which is compatible with the Microchip PICmicro Midrange Device HW architecture, and SW Instruction Set.

This has been made following the ECSS-Q-ST-60-02C “ASIC and FPGA development “design flow and the ECSS-Q-HB-60-02A “Techniques for radiation effects mitigation in ASICs and FPGAs handbook” design guidelines, in order to qualify the design to operate in the space environment.

Accordingly, to ECSS design flow, several documents have been produced during thesis development such as URD (User Requirement Document), ARS (FPGA requirements document), ADP (FPGA development plan), ADD (FPGA detailed design equivalent to a datasheet), VVP (Verification and Validation Plan) and VVR (Verification and Validation Report).

The design was implemented on INTEL-ALTERA Cyclone IV Development Board and an additional test board has been designed and built. An extensive validation campaign were performed according to the plan defined in advance. A firmware test application were also developed exercising all the I/O interfaces and demonstrating the process of embedding an application written in C-language and compiled for the same class of microcontrollers using standard tools.

Thesis done in cooperation with Leonardo Company (Ing. Davide Fiorini, Airborne and Space Systems division) and BIS-Italia (definition of tasks and objectives, verification of design).
