- failure identification in terms of Ground/Cabin Crew observed faults and electronic control units detected faults;

- development of time effective procedures to isolate faults on Aircraft equipment (troubleshooting analysis);

- update or issue the Failure Mode & Effect Criticality Analysis (FMECA) to system aircraft level (hydraulic system, fuel system, propulsion, etc.), in order to seek critical areas and as ultimate goal, meeting the compliance with quality and internal standards so as to overcome the approval and certification of the M-346 jet trainer.

During this time for the flight simulators of the TORNADO, Alenia Aermacchi M-346, CL-415 aircrafts and for the

Agusta AB212 helicopter, my activities covered the following areas:

- development of mathematical models for the airborne systems simulation (hydraulic, fuel, electrical, engine models and torque transmission, helicopter propulsion & power system, etc.);

- mathematical models to simulate the flight mechanics of missiles (IR or radar guided), bombs (laser, GPS guided or “dumb”) and to manage and release the external ordnances and payload;

- analysis about weights, inertias and aircraft center of mass location;

- preliminary aerodynamic analysis through CFD software for non-viscous fluids (MGAERO software).

During this time I realized a feasibility study and mission analysis to verify the possibility to enlarge the flight mission of the USV-FTB1 experimental vehicle, from transonic to high supersonic flight (above Mach 2.5). The topics analyzed during this work considered the analysis and design of flight path and the mission analysis, regarding various hypothesis for the propulsion and attitude control systems and verifying the possibility of a controlled flight in every phase of the mission, through the definition of a control system and his verification with simulations.

Still in the USV-FTB program (Unmanned Space Vehicle-Flying Test Beds http://www.cira.it/en/settori-en/velivoli/laboratori/laboratorio-volante-usv),

I improved my knowledge and experience in flight mechanics and attitude control with my 18 months thesis work, in partnership with Italian Aerospace Research Center (CIRA www.cira.it) and Polytechnic of Milan.

My thesis covered a wide range of topics, i.e.:

- nonlinear system control, mainly concerning the dynamics inversion method applied to non-linear models;

- aerodynamic and aircraft design, mainly concerning the trim, manoeuvrability and stability analysis for various flight configurations;

- atmospheric and extra-atmospheric flight and its attitude control, discerning between stability and instability flight conditions;

- suborbital flight trajectory design in order to maximize the heat flux;

- parabolic trajectory design in order to experiment microgravity aboard;

- robust model study and design via mu-analysis;

- final design of a typical flight profile in order of suitable load factor, maneuverability limits of the aircraft, deflections and frequency response of the aerodynamics control surfaces, deflection of vectorable nose, response of RCS systems (Reaction Control System) during extra-atmospheric flight.

I graduated in 2005 in Aerospace Engineering at Polytechnic of Milan with final mark of 85/100.

My 18 months thesis work, in partnership with the Italian Aerospace Research Center (CIRA), dealt with the development of a flight simulator of a space shuttle involved in a suborbital re-entry trajectory, as foreseen in the USV (Unmanned Space Vehicle) program. My supervisor was Prof.s Ercoli Amalia FINZI and I was also supported by my supervisor’s assistant, Eng. Francesco CURRERI (project engineer in USV program). My academic career covered the following research fields of industrial interest:

- structural with Science of Constructions, Aeronautics Constructions I and II, Structure and Aerospace Materials I;

- control theory with Automatic and Aerospace Servo-systems;

- flight mechanics and control with Flight Space Mechanics I and II, Automatic, Aerospace Servosystems;

- propulsion with Aerospace Engines and Rockets;

- fluid mechanics with Fluid dynamics and Aerodynamics.

Workshop in ESTEC following the course of Aerospace Systems Design, during that I developed the thermal control system for a satellite. The course aimed at achieving skills in designing space missions.

Students worked in a team under the supervision of ESA’s personal trainers and tutors, making use of ESA’s knowledge and support, visiting ESA’s sites (ESTEC) and meeting ESA’s staff and their work.
