Mission Planning Software Engineer for LEO Missions


EUMETSAT / TSS / GSI / MCAT (Visionspace Technologies)


Technical Coordinator/Responsible for the “Mission Planning LEO” area of the Monitoring and Control Applications Team. Main duties comprise: provision of support evolutive maintenance services for the EPS and Sentinel 3 Programmes also provision of support to establishment of new Programmes at EUMETSAT, namely via support to the procurement of EPS-SG and Jason-CS MCO Sub-Segments.

Main maintenance-related tasks/activities:

Liaising with OPS users for the provision of first-line investigation of anomalies and identification/translation of new OPS evolutions into technical specifications;

Providing management support and performing follow-up of anomaly resolution by liaising with external industrial partners and suppliers responsible for maintenance contracts;

Reception, installation and execution of formal IV&V activities for S/W deliveries;

Development and maintenance of test-harness frameworks for automated and unattended test execution;

Responsible for the definition and consolidation ofa Mission Planning S/W Kernel/ Customization/ Mission Specific set of functions with the goal of rationalizing existing commonalities among the different LEO missions and thus introducing significant cost-savings (in the long term) with the maintenance of the different Ground Segment Mission Planning Sub-Systems;

Performing review and writing of technical documentation such as Test Plans, Test Procedures, Test Reports, Interface Control Documents, Architectural and Software Design Documents, System and Software Requirements Documents, Software Release Notes and Software User Manuals;

All S/W maintenance activities in direct of support routine operations are conducted as per the well-established EUMETSAT Change Management and Quality Assurance processes (including participation in anomaly and engineering change review boards) and supplemented by S/W maintenance working practices developed at the level of the MCAT team;

Additionally, I also provide support to procurement activities (Sentinel3, EPS-SG and Jason-CS):

Specification of Mission Planning sub-systems for the Mission Control and Operations sub-segment (phases B/C/D), namely, definition, engineering and management of system-level technical requirements supported by DOORS and compliant with EUMETSAT's requirements change management processes;

Providing support and participating in technical reviews for the MOC (Mission Operations and Control) and MPS Sub-Systems (e.g.: SWRR, PDR and CDR-soon) ensuring the specification and design derived by the industrial contractor is properly performed and fulfils the EUMETSAT's mission needs (by interfacing with the OPIT team - Operations Preparation and Integration team, as required).

Discussing and defining concepts, performing technical analysis and capturing its details as Technical Notes and Diagrams.

System architect, designer and developer of Monitoring and Control solutions for UMARF, EARS and DADF. Also, responsible for collection of user requirements, formal testing/validation campaigns and writing of technical documentation. Monitoring and Control Systems for Dissemination and Archival Systems – Designer and developer of a generic solution for near real-time monitoring and process control, which enables OPS Analysts to monitor and command the flow/ingestion/ dissemination of Meteorological products  for UMARF, EARS and DADF facilities at EUMETSAT.

Earth Observation Portal - EUMETSAT’s main user doorway, which allows searching and retrieval of information about all MET products, S/W and documentation, distributed by EUMETSAT and its partner agencies. Responsible for design and development of the back-end data management layer and web-enabled Dynamic Reports’ MMI.

GEMS – Generic Event Monitoring Software – Responsible for formal acceptance and testing of software delivered by the external contractor.

OSSI – Operations Service Status Indicator – Provides real-time monitoring of all EUMETSAT’s disseminated MET products, available to the wide public via the EUMETSAT’s corporate website. Responsible for the design and development of the software.
