CV

SUMMARY

Talented experimental Physicist with a strong background in beam-line experimentation and pulsed laser spectroscopy. A pragmatic and resourceful problem solver with a range of assets including CAD design, engineering workshop skills, computational data analysis and scientific instrument control and automation. Publication list available on request.

EXPERIENCE

10/2013 to 10/2017 PhD Candidate | University College London | London

During my PhD at the UCL Physics and Astronomy department I was part of the team that constructed a trap-based pulsed positron beam optimised for laser spectroscopy of positronium, the electron-positron matter-antimatter pair. I was very fortunate to be the first student of a new research group and as a result I was able to help build the facility from scratch. Here I gained skills in building UHV vacuum systems, automated instrumentation, basic electronics, and the operation and maintenance of pulsed dye lasers. As a group of four we have produced 13 published articles in the last four years.

2003 to 2009 General work | Various companies | London

Between leaving school at 16 and going to university at 22 I was employed in various capacities. These included manual labour for a carpentry and renovation firm, Security guarding, bartending, and kitchen work.

EDUCATION

2013 Bachelor of Science | University of Surrey | Physics 1st Class with Honours

Undertaking a degree course in Physics without an adequate pre-university education was very difficult. I had to learn advanced level mathematics with a first exposure to many of the staple concepts such as differential calculus, statistical analysis, and Newtonian mechanics. This major disadvantage did not deter me from working hard, and learning 'how to learn' quickly. I received the best overall performance award on completion of my degree.
My final year dissertation was undertaken in the field of experimental 'Soft matter' physics, and the work led to my first publication. I was a founding member of the observational astronomy group within the Physics society which organised community engagement stargazing events.

2010 Foundation degree in science | London South Bank University | London

I spent one year at London South Bank University where I studied for a foundation degree in science. I was exposed to basic chemistry, biology, and GCSE level mathematics. The course was designed as a prerequisite for further study at south bank. The available routes following the foundation course included bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry, sports and exercise science, and forensic science. However, I decided toward the end of the course that a core subject would be a better choice so I applied to the university of Surrey Physics department.

INTERESTS

Computers and networking, particularly network security, penetration testing, and the dark net. I also have a keen interest in robotics, I built a wheeled 'photovore' robot at home using a micro controller and light sensitive resistors. I enjoy music, and I play the trumpet and bass guitar.
