Spacecraft Operations Specialist / Communications Engineer
Summary& Personal Qualities:
I enjoyed a 25 year career in the Air Force as an electronics and communications engineer, which helped me to develop a wide range of engineering, managerial and multi-tasking skills. I am an excellent communicator, used to working with people from a variety of technical and cultural backgrounds. I have a solid foundation in electronics and RF systems and I have developed a wide experience in satellite systems, data communication networks, digital and RF techniques. Primarily I am an organiser and systems problem solver, accustomed to making decisions and instigating the most appropriate solutions for a task. I am a proven dynamic manager of personnel, systems, projects and networks. I am a strong team leader who works well under pressure and within deadlines. I retired from the RAF at the rank of Flight Sergeant (Information Systems Manager) after 25 years of service, in Jan 2006.
I have worked in the spacecraft mission control environment for over 10 years and received over a year of technical training in spacecraft subsystems, control and operating systems. My current role is very rewarding; it crosses boundaries between that of an SOE, senior controller, analyst and spacecraft engineer.
I was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire in 1964. I have been married for over 20 years and we have 2 teenage children. I keep active with a mix of interests including walking, skiing, scuba diving and a variety of martial arts. I enjoy travel and I am confident at communicating in other European languages.
Spacecraft Control and Space Industry Related Experience
1) Jan 2006 → Current: Wiltshire. SERCO DSN / ParadigmServices - Lead Spacecraft Controller (LSC) & Operations Engineer.
I am employed as a Category 1 LSC / SOE on the Spacecraft Operations Team (SOT), responsible for the configuration and health & safety of the Skynet fleet. The fleet is a mix of ageing Skynet 4 satellites and modern technology Skynet 5 (E3000) spacecraft. Skynet 4 satellites require constant ground observation & engineering intervention, particularly during eclipse season. I lead a 4 man team, my duties include the supervision and co-ordination of all scheduled / routine spacecraft and ground control system operations. When Spacecraft or ground system problems occur I am responsible for carrying out the engineering diagnostics, instigating solutions & recovery where possible and providing technical input to the associated anomaly investigations. I provide out of hours on-call support for spacecraft FDIR and Power & Thermal engineering. Below is a list of activities and subsidiary roles I am, or have been involved in:

develop PowerPoint based training packages for the initial training and continuance training of operations staff.
In 2009, I spent 3 months as a Consultant Operation / Implementation Engineer on the Astrium Yahsat project. I provided project management functions for the team, including PC file structures, engineering logs and spreadsheets. I wrote and implemented software scripts for the ground equipment simulators and hardware systems. I wrote test scripts and took part in the VV&T program of the ground equipment control systems.
I was the SOT lead for the integration and VV&T of a new Tri Station Ranging System (TSRS). I helped to develop the software interface; I also wrote and validated the procedural workflows and delivered the training to operations staff.
In 2007 I was the SOT lead for the integration and testing of a new MOC / PSOC payload interface. I helped to test and develop software procedures and was instrumental in the success of their delivery. I also co-wrote the procedure manuals and delivered the training program to personnel.
I have been involved in the LEOP of 3, Skynet 5 spacecraft; I was a dedicated launch phase controller on the LEOP team for Skynet 5C and I have been nominated as a control team leader for the LEOP of Skynet 5D.
2) May 1996 – Mar 2001: RAF Oakhanger. Shift Lead, TTC Engineer, Instructor.
I spent 5 years as a mission controller serving in the RAF: After a year on the team I was promoted to shift leader. In this post I was responsible for the supervision of all the routine spacecraft operations and the instigation of spacecraft contingency procedures; I was also the RAF team manager for Skynet 4D IOT phase.
After 2 years I was assigned the role of TT&C Systems Manager; I managed a team with the engineering responsibility for the TT&C WAN, S & X band Satellite Ground Terminals and their associated networks. I was responsible for the control centre TT&C during the Skynet 4E LEOP & IOT.
In my last year at Oakhanger I took on an instructor role; training military personnel in spacecraft operations procedures, satellite subsystems, TT&C configuration, fault diagnosis and spacecraft contingency recovery (FDIR).
Communications, Radar & Missile Systems Engineering Experience
3) Feb 2004 – Jan 2006: RAF Brize Norton & multiple deployed locations
Tactical Communications Wing (TCW) – Information Systems Manager.
I was responsible for the planning and management of strategic satellite communications deployments, including the installation and configuration of the associated ICT networks and hardware. For each project, from the requirements capture I developed the communications infrastructure (CIS) plan; I continued, controlling all engineering phases of the deployment, including the management and direction of up to 40 personnel on the ground. The team installed the satellite rear-link, communications nodes, telephone systems, LANs and microwave links. I coordinated 5 large satcom / ICT projects over the 2 year period in various, often arduous locations, under intense pressure and time constraints.
I received training & experience on the following equipment: Ku & X band TSGT including VSAT, various network nodes (CISCO & Nortel Passport), mobile LANS & MANS, IP crypto, MHS, Meridian PABX and microwave links. I also completed military project management & IT (ITIL based) training and leadership courses.
4)Mar 2001 – Feb 2004: NATO HQ, Lisbon, Portugal
NOC - Digital Networks Engineer / NOC Manager.
I was responsible for the maintenance and control of the NATO multiple service communications networks within Portugal. I worked as a Network Operations Centre Manager, working with PROMINA, CISCO and MAXIMA bandwidth management and routing systems, managing the Portuguese and Spanish WAN.
I developed systems of work for fault diagnosis, rectification and forward reporting. I was responsible for the co-ordination of all problems that crossed boundaries between technical areas within the HQ and progressing any issues that were the responsibility of outside agencies and network providers.
5) Oct 1982 – May 1996: Various locations – UK, Europe, Middle East, Falklands
rapier Missile Systems Engineering– Engineering Manager.
The Rapier system is a tactical, short-range air defence missile system operated by the RAF Regiment. The nature of the work helped to develop skills in electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering. Over the 14 years I completed numerous technical, leadership and management courses and attained the rank of Sergeant. My service was divided equally between the 1st& 2nd/ 3rdline maintenance sections. I completed 10 operational tours of duty, often in arduous conditions. In addition to my primary role I took on the following responsibilities:
