Skill summary:

Over 20 years experience in applied FE analysis (mainly MSC-NASTRAN) in Spacecraft structures and sub-systems. Principal expertise focused in structural dynamics spanning frequency response, random vibration, SRS based methods, transient and non-linear static and dynamic analysis.

My personal perception is as a practical engineer with experience of engineering hardware, design, specification and testing who is able to support practical experience in design and manufacture with an analytical capability.

In my current role, as Snr Specialist, I am technically responsible for a group of Spacecraft Prime mechanical analysts and have recently been promoted to the EADS technical experts roster (EADS 2%) having been Systems Team Leader for over 8 years. I take pride from an ability to work with other people and see myself as a team member / player who can when necessary work on his own initiative to meet business, team or personal goals.

In addition to group technical responsibility, I have focused on a number of business R&D activities which are detailed below.

  • Application of ABAQUS Explicit for impact analysis of vented airbag systems for planetary probe protection on descent.
  • Application of ABAQUS Explicit and NASTRAN SOL600 (Implicit) for folded structure problems involving tape spring hinge technologies.
  • Research into the mechanics and source generators of m vibration (jitter de-point consideration) in Stirling cycle cryo-coolers.
  • Application of stochastic analysis based methods in Spacecraft system design.
  • Optmisation and Mission reliability assessment of a vented airbag using Hyperstudy.
  • Application of Constrained Layer Damping technology to passive damping of Spacecraft structures. Computation of modal loss factor by ESDU, Strain Energy methods and Direct Freq. Response methods using material complex modulus and reduced freq. /temperature nomograph data.

Definition of zonal random vibration requirements for payload and equipments through historical acoustic test data obtained from Spacecraft testing.

Simulation of acoustics through random vibration pressure analysis in FE.

Lead Stress Engineer: GOMOS instrument optical pointing instrument. Detail stressing and stress signatory for optical pointing assembly. Specification of stiffness and inertial coupling control of design to meet high inertial stability requirements <4 m rads optical dynamic jitter resulting from 6 dof base sine inputs. Random vibration simulation of acoustic loading, sine and base random vibration input (equipment sizing and stressing with respect to random vibration). Transient shock analysis. Thermo-elastic analysis and control of launch and on-station thermal distortion loads on Beryllium optical surface. Vibration test conductor for sine, random and shock tests. Correlation of FE model with electro-dynamic shaker test measurements.

Lead Stress Engineer ENVISAT I Solar array primary deployment mechanism. Detail stressing /drawing stress signatory supported by classical hand methods and FE. Random vibration analysis, freq. response analysis, transient shock analysis, thermo-elastic analysis. Structural specification development for composite tube manufacture and fatigue requirements for launch, Spacecraft manoeuvre loads and cyclic thermal stresses.
