  • providing engineering support under the MSAAS contract to the Royal Australian Air Force and Civilian Airlines;
  • analysing complex simulator performance problems in a variety of aircraft systems;
  • developing software to remedy performance problems using all available technical information for the relevant aircraft system;
  • developing and carrying out advanced testing procedures for software changes, with an emphasis on system regression;
  • adhering to the strict guidelines necessary to maintain CAE’s status as an AEO (Authorised Engineering Organisation) to the Australian Defence Force; and

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (A SELECTION)

  • Blackhawk VSI (Vertical Situation Indicator):Responsible for both developing software to support backup power requirements for the VSI cockpit instrument and coordinating a team of electrical engineers and hardware technicians to conduct the installation at a remote location.
  • Hercules C130J Low-pass filter for runway roughness: Responsible for developing a second order controller to filter large runway gradient changes as received from a visual-scene database. This required intensive testing of the simulators hydraulic motion system with the customer (Royal Australian Air Force) under a strict schedule.
  • Blackhawk snapshot recall function: Central responsibility for identifying and resolving software anomalies in connection with a high priority and longstanding project of CAE. This involved extensive on-site testing at Oakey Air Force Base and required an innovative solution to elevator actuation and hydraulic system issues.
  • Hercules C130H Flight Director: Responsible for improving the behaviour of the pilot’s flight director warning indications by redesigning the internal system logic. In the absence of technical data to support the design, I drew upon a group of international specialists and flight crew to identify design requirements and validate my final software design. The improvement has since been applied to C130H simulators around the world.

 

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Health Monitoring of Vehicles During Re-entry (MSc thesis):Research included investigating the system and scenario-related constraints on a compact device designed to record fragmentation data during spacecraft breakup. Work included trajectory, power, communications and data handling analyses using a systems engineering approach. Applications to model calibration and spacecraft flight-data recorders.
  • CanSat: Involved in team to manufacture a ‘satellite in a can’. Designed and built ground-station circuit board, designed ground-station software and co-designed communications protocol for telemetry and command. Above and beyond requirements of the project, we successfully integrated a variety of sensors including 3-axis accelerometers and gyros, and the beginnings of a Kalman Filter.
  • Development of a Variable Stability Module for a Full Motion Flight Simulator (BE honours thesis): Research included investigating and validating the use of multivariate polynomials to represent nonlinear aerodynamic models of high performance aircraft. Worked as part of a team responsible for implementing a new visual front-end, developing motion software and designing an improved data communication system.
  • Aircraft Design: Led a six-member team in the design of a Morphing Unmanned Rapid-Reaction Rescue Aerial Vehicle (MURRAV) to a variety of specifications, including weight, speed, deployment methods and flight performance requirements. We went further to present our idea to industry representatives.
  • Wing box design and construction:Designed and built an aluminium wing torsion box to a variety of weight and load requirements. We paid particular attention to quality management of components as would be expected in industry.
